My daughter is just 14 months and only says one word...should I be concerned...is this normal? I am telling her what everything is around the house and out and about, also asking if she can say it...leaving time for her to try...she "talks" all the time, but only one word (ashes, ashes; from Ring Around the Rosies)....any suggestions?

What can I do next?

My daughter is 19 months old and only says a hand full of words. Mostly things that start with D. She very smart and understands everything, but doesn't seem interested in saying other words. I talked to the pediatrician and was told that there is no worries. That she would re-evaluate this when my daughter is 21 months. She told me that this could just mean that she is carefully studing everything and will be that much more intelligent.

I guess I would just keep on top of it, but try not to worry and compare to much. I guess they'll talk when they want to.

Good luck.

This is totally normal, my daughter did the same thing and then when she could talk --watch out!!!! I think as long as she knows what things are. or if you question weather she understands things. Then you could consult your Doc. But in the meantime enjoy.LOL really she is young, my daugher was 20 months before she really could get things out. good luck

My son was the same way. Everyone would tell me it was normal, but eventually I had to take him to get his hearing tested. His hearing is fine, but It turns out he has a speech articulation problem. He is now in preschool seeing a speech pathologist 3 times a week. I found out that speech thearapy is offered by most school districts from birth. I wished I would have known that sooner. My son is advancing now, but had I known sooner I could have been doing the right exercises with him.

I just responded to someone else with almost the same question.. Here's my response to them. But replace the "him"'s with her of course (:
my email is ____@____.com if you want to talk more..

Hi there.. As long as he can understand you.. Don't worry about it.. I know you're thinking "easier said than done", etc.. I thought the same thing when people told me that about my daughter.. She was only saying a few words clear and the rest literally sounded like chinese or other foreign language.. She didn't start talking well until around 2 yrs 9 months old.. Just before turning 3.. but thats just when it "took off".. Then it started coming out more and more.. and now she'll be 4 in April and is talking good. She still trips herself up a little here and there when trying to talk too fast, but she is where she is suppose to be. It really helped a lot when put in her preschool/day care in Feb 2007 (she turned 3 April 2007).. Also.. She was in a program called TOTE (teaching our tots early) Its through your school district.. Ask your pediatrician. A teacher comes out to YOUR house and does an evaluation. They did the first evaluation on my daughter at 19 months and said that she didn't qualify.. So then they did another one at her 2nd(April 2006) birthday and she did qualify for the program because of what she was NOT saying yet.. So, I was reassured by the teacher that my daughter was fine and that its "just a speech delay".. The teacher comes to your house for aprx 1 hour - 1.5 hours 2 times a week. They work with the child and show you things you can do with them, etc. The woman we had was great.. We miss her! In May 2007 after she turned 3, the teacher did another evaluation and she was pleased to tell me that my daughter was well within the normal range now and did not need the program anymore. Once we had to put her into day care, the teacher changed her schedule of coming to our house 2 times a week, to going to the daycare 2 times a week. They work with you a lot. This was through the Woodhaven School district (we live in allen park). Good luck. But don't worry, just keep talking to him and repeating things, he'll pick it up..

It's totally normal. When she's ready to start spitting out the words they will come in a flood. If she's 2 and still not talking much then I would ask for an evaluation. Just be patient, it'll happen before you know it!
