I have a 12 year old son who has always been prone to nosebleeds. In the past, we would see 1 nosebleed which was really no big deal and not see one again for a while. Lately he is having like 1 a week. Could be at home, work, sleeping. No pattern. They are not gushers but the fact he is getting them more frequently has me wondering why. Anyone ever experience this before?? Thanks!!
Put a humidifier in his room... maybe it's to dry.. tell him not to itch or pick his nose... since it might be dry and this causes problems.. buy some baby mist spray for noses.. it's saline.. it works good at wetting the inside of the nose.. good luck
Nose bleeds can be caused by the dry air in your home. Get a humidifier and buy house plants. Humidifiers work great if you keep them clean, but ample plants naturally moisturize the air and also give off oxygen.
Take him to the doctor and find out. Since he's 12, it could be almost anything. It could be dry air, sinus problems, allergies, hereditary, or even high blood pressure. My son used to get them when he was younger, but it's hereditary in our family. We had to have a cool mist humidifier in the room, but that didn't work as good as our doctor's vaseline trick. He had us swab his nose with vaseline to keep it moist.
You've gotten a lot of advice, and suggestions. It really could be any number of things causing the nose bleeds, so you should check with your son's doctor. When my brother was little he had frequent nose bleeds and the doctor told my M. is was because he was low in iron. So she had to cook lots of iron rich foods. I remember eating liver and onions once a week! So that's something else to run by the doctor. I hope you figure out what is causing the bleeds.
Try a saline solution nose spray. Me and my daughter get this as well if the air is too dry or the weather changes constantly. With the type of heat we have at our place it's happens often. I just put a pan of water on the stove with Vicks in it and let it boil, then put it on lowfor a while. It seems to help.

I did as a child, and had the same thing with my eldest: We both had daily nosebleeds with no warning and no discernable reason. I was told that during growth spurts, sometimes the tiny capilaries in the nose are closer to the surface, which leads to an increase in nosebleeds. My daughter had the problem for one summer, and it has never returned, which was pretty much what happened to me as a child.
Still I think you should have a doctor look at it to be sure it is not a sign of something else.
I used to be like that, too...I was actually on medication til the pharmacist told my Dad that it was nothing more than mega doses of vitamin C (I now take 1000 Mg/day, 1500 if I've got a cold...). I also keep my house more moist than most (40% humidity, at least...), and if it's REALLY bad (like in the middle of winter) I use Ponaris, an OTC medication that is found behind the pharmacy counter. It's the consistency of vaseline, and you put that in the nostrils to keep them lubricated.

Maybe your son has a vein close to the surface of the skin inside his nostril, and then if he picks his nose he ruptures the vein, causing the nosebleed? I say this because my son had the same nosebleed situation as you are describing, and the pediatrician said a different doctor could cauterize inside the nostril. My son heard all this. The nosebleeds stopped, so the cauterization was not necessary.
I get frequent nose bleeds during allergy season. Talk to his doc. about a saline nose spray or allergy meds. My husband got them and it turned out he had a devieated septum? Not quite sure what that means, but he had surgery and rarely gets them now.
I have an eight year old with the same problem, especially so during the winter months. Each night, I put Vasaline, or Vicks in her nose with a Q-tip, being careful not to cross contaminate. This prevents her nosebleeds significantly! You might want to try this, hopefully it will work for you too!

could be the dryness in the air outside, inside in the house, where ever. anyway, try lubricating the nostrils with a bit of vaseline on the end of a q-tip at night b4 going to bed. it may help.

What does MD say?
Has MD done tests?
If you don't know what you are dealing with ie: allergy, vein problems in the nose, or whatever, then you need to find out especially since you say it might happen while sleeping.
My opinion find reason even if reason is simple because if the reason is not simple, it is better treated quickly.

My brother was prone to nosebleeds as a child. He would wake up in the middle of the night with his pillow soaked. He had a weak blood vessel and used to have it cauterized by the doctor. if the pediatrician doesn't have an answer I would recommend a visit to an ENT. They should also check his bp.

Hi Angela, My son had this problem as well. His started when he was younger. I brought it up at one of his regular check ups and his doctor had us see a pediatric nose doctor. He seen him and said the blood vessels were to close to the surface inside of his nose, thats what was causing the nose bleeds. He had a procedure done where they go in the nose and burn the ends of the blood vessels to prevent this from occuring. It is done as a same day surgery. My son did have some minor discomfort the day of and next day but has been fine since. Might be something you want to look into. Good Luck!
