Nose Question

My son took a head drive straight into my nose (ouch!). I heard a pop and immediately put ice and arnica on it. It didn't really swell and very little bruising. But since that incident, I have felt very stressed. I really feel it in my shoulders. It it possible/probable that a hit to the nose could be affecting the tension in my neck/shoulders? (It's been over a week and my nose still hurts. I haven't been to the doctor because I don't think there's anything she can do even if it's fractured. I just don't know if all this tension is related.)

What can I do next?

Are you open to going to a Chiropractor? They are excellent for back tension. Or go to a Massage Therapist. Both would help you.
Good Luck

YES. Go see a chiropractor. You could have easily shoved something out of alignment in your neck or shoulder region.

Hugs.... My kiddo broke my nose 3 times in his first 3 years. Ahhhh cannonball head.

The first time I thought it was just bruised (no black eyes, no swelling, so I just kinda assumed no break), until 2 weeks later when I was rubbing it (you know how you mess with things that hurt?) and "Snick". Almost immediately it was like color came back into the world I didn't know was missing. The pain and tenseness and irritation just kinda flowed out of me. And then, it ached for another week or so.

The other 2 times: 1) I "snicked" it back into place immediately. 2) It broke on the interior... so nothing to be done... short of shoving a pencil up my nose and trying to set it ((can you tell I had no insurance at the time?)). I never snored before but I snore now. Sigh.

If it's fractured, she can set it, which you reeeeally want done as quickly as possible. Even just a LITTLE off "center" and it's amazing what a relief it is when the bone goes back to where it belongs. I'm fortunate it hadn't already started knitting. But I heal slowly. My nose didn't LOOK off center, but man oh man... "snick" is really not something that you can mistake.

I agree with Amy. Oh & if you think chiros are quacks as some people feel, you can go to a Dr. that is a D.O. instead of an M.D. & they do adjustments too. I slept wrong & kept getting these sharp pains eery now & again when i turned my head a certain way & got an adjustment & felt so much better in my neck area. Best of luck & be sure to add this to his book! :)

You might have jerked your muscle from the jolt/pain of the hit, and it's just sore. I would also suggest you go to the doc. At least see if your spouse will massage you and see if that helps. Hope you feel better. :)

Most likely you popped the cartilage in your nose and bruised it. If you broke it, it would hurt like crazy! It is possible it is related to your shoulders but only because you are stressed about it. =) Take a nice, hot bath and give your husband puppy eyes for a back rub.

My daughter did something like this last year. I was laying on my bed and she was jumping and landed on my nose. Oh my gosh did it HURT!. I also heard a slight crack. Your nose is all cartilage so anything is possible. Anyway, it hurt for at least a week and tehn lightly for a month longer. And I did have tension in my shoulders and neck for a while. I massaged it a bit and used warm cloths to help ease it.

I would go to the chiropractor. It's amazing how something that seems so small (your nose) can actually "refer" pain into other areas of your body. A good chiropractor can work wonders.

The injury to the nose isn't probably directly responsible for your shoulder stress. However the head dive that hurt your nose probably also caused your whole body to be involved. You are most likely correct that the Dr. can't do much for the nose, and that is just a matter of time to heal. However a good chiropractor would likely be able to identify and correct the problem with your shoulders. The shoulder problem is most likely the worst part of your injuries and I would have that checked.

The muscles are all attached and certainly the nose is making you feel the tension elsewhere.

You should see a doctor; your nose may be dislocated and the doctor can set it so that it's back where it should be and tape it to keep it from causing more problems later. Good luck

Ice and Arnica was the right thing to do. I'm sure it still hurts because it's bruised. The bruising would actually show more on the inside on the nose. I'm sure there is stress with this issue, but a hit to the face will definitely affect your shoulders. They're all connected. It has the same affect as whiplash does. Visit your chiropractor to get some relief and prevent any further problems. If you don't have one or don't know of one, go to ucspine.com and find one in your area. A principled upper cervical chiropractor can help.
