Hi Ladies,
I am 28 weeks pregnant, I went to the doctor today, well actually saw the nurse because my doctor was stuck out of the country or something. But anyways, I am measuring 29 weeks. The nurse made me schedule an ultrasound for my next visit to check to see if there is too much amnoitic fluid. My last baby was 9 lbs and I always measured big with him. At first I didnt worry about it, but then I came home and googled "excess amnoitic fluid" and it says lots of scary things! Heart defects, premature birth, plancental abruption, etc... Now, Im freaking out! I have to wait 3 weeks for an ultrasound. Any words to make me feel better? My anxiety is getting the best of me today!

What can I do next?

I had an HUGE amount of excessive amniotic fluid. I was off the charts. I was on bed-rest the last trimester, becuase there was so much weight from the fluid, I'd go into contractions pretty much doing anything. I had to get a shot a couple of times, to stop contractions, and they were scared I might deliver early. I stayed on complete bed-rest as much as possible and drank at least one gallon of water a day. It helped with the contractions. I was able to carry my son until 3 days before my due date. I ended up having a scheduled c-section, because of all the fluid. I don't know how much fluid you had, but my Dr. said she had never seen a woman with as much.
I did get several high level ultrasounds to look at his heart, brain, and everything else. Everything always looked good. My son was perfectly healthy and 21 months later, he still is :) Oh, and he was only 7 pounds.

Stay off the internet! My Dr always tell us to not internet search symptoms because you get such a wide array of information it can be frightening and overwhelming when it doesnt need to be. Keep calm, and dont worry about it until you have to. Im sure thats easier said then done, just try.

You aren't listening to what the nurse told you and that you told us. You are googling something that you don't even know if you have. The nurse wanted to double check the ultrasound TO SEE IF you have excess fluid. Not to see WHY you have it. You probably don't even have excess fluid, just another big baby. :)

My husband always tells me: Stay off the internet! when I start looking up medical stuff. Wait until you actually have something concrete to google. Unless you just want to google "measuring one week too big", because that's all you've been told. And even with that, it could be that your due date is off. :))

I always make a ton of amniotic fluid. Like a TON. I get so huge. They thought my first was going to be gigantic, but was less than 7 pounds. I had a great amount of fluid. All of my children have been perfectly healthy! While the internet can give good information, they also give a lot of rare and scary stories. Don't add stress to your life. If something is wrong, you will have plenty of time to prepare after your u/s. Until then, enjoy your pregnancy without fear.

Measuring one week ahead is no big deal. Your next appointment you could measure a week behind, or right on target, or still one week ahead. Sounds like she scheduled you for a better-safe-than-sorry approach. There are some very scary reasons for excessive fluid, but odds are baby is just not reading the book on growing at an average pace. Some kids just like to grow at different rates. If you were measuring three or four weeks ahead it would be way more concerning, but I think the odds are highly in your favor that everything is just fine. Now, no more googling. Lay on the sofa and feel your baby kick and have a nap (if your first will let you!) Good luck Momma, bet everything will be fine.

If there was really a concern about too much amniotic fluid, the nurse would have scheduled you immediately. If in doubt, call your obgyn. Most likely senario-- you're having another 9 lb baby. I was measuring 38 when I was 35 weeks. They wanted to do an ultrasound on me as well. I went into labor the following week. My DD was just ready to get out. She weighed 8.1 lbs and was very healthy.

I agree, call and see if you can at least speak with another ob. This is their job, to calm your fears and get baby here safe and sound. You as a pregnant mother have every right in the world to know what is going on inside you. youre the mother already. if you sense there maybe issues or that you need comfirmation of health, it is your absolute right. Some doc offices arent that understanding. Be firm. It is so scary not knowing. I will keep you in my prayers. I hope everything turns out wonderful for your family and the new addition on its way. Keep us posted:)

God bless ya' mama

NEVER google medical stuff. That's what happens.
Relax.
They can't exactly predict the baby's age.
Calm down and go to your follow up.
Good luck!

Youre probably just going to have another big baby :) Mine both measured big during pregnancy, and were both over 9lbs... A pregnant mind of course is a worried mind, but remember if they were REALLY worried about the baby, you wouldnt be waiting 3 weeks for an ultrasound :)

If you are really that upset I would call the dr office back and see if you can get in earlier. I'm sure another OB can see you until your OB gets back in the office. You dont need to sit and worry for 3 wks. Sorry you are going through this.

My cousin had excess fluid. Her baby was less than 6 lbs, but healthy. They just needed extra monitoring. I would call if you need to. Someone should be able to talk to you about YOUR case.

I don't think it is anything. With my last one appointment I was measuring two weeks ahead then the next appointment two weeks later I was right on. My doctor wasn't even worried. I think the nurse was trying to show off to the doctor. I wouldn't worry about it, by the next appointment you might be right on. Plus she might not even have measured you right.

Please try not to worry. I measured ahead with my first 2 pregnancies (and I suspect I will start to measure ahead very soon with this pregnancy). In both cases I was sent for an u/s. I never had any problems with excess fluid. I just make larger babies (not huge) and I carry all in front. I had normal pregnancies and vaginal deliveries w/o any complications.

Try not to get yourself too worked up. I'm surprised that she is sending you for an u/s for only measuring 1 week ahead. I thought that was pretty common??

I actually had too much amniotic fluid and ended up vaginally delivering a healthy baby boy. So just because you have polyhydraminos doesnt mean you'd necessarily suffer any consequences. If you feel you need to know sooner, make a call back to your doctor. If you do, in fact, suffer from polyhydrominos, you'll be seeing a lot of them for stress tests and more frequent check-ups.

I measured smaller one appt then a previous one and they scheduled my ultra sound for the same day. If there is a concern it should be done asap not 3 weeks from now

My sis had extra amniotic fluid, always measured ahead and she (and the baby) was fine. However, if there is some sort of medical emergency or defects, I'm sure you will be in good hands and will love the baby no matter what. :)

Same thing happened with my last son. Only I was measuring 3 weeks bigger. They did a sonogram and everything was right on target but they could tell he was measuring a little big. They did the gestational diabetes/glucose test again to make sure but that came back fine as well. By the next month I was only measuring a week or two bigger and it seemed to fluctuate as another mom said it can do. My son was on track to being over 9 lbs like 2 of his 3 brothers but he came 4 weeks early (most likely a cause of 3 prior c/s and him getting to be big) and was a whopping 6 lbs 12 oz.

Someone else brought up a good point. Is your EDD based on your cycle/calendar or an early sonogram which is more accurate. My last two were due a week LATER than my cycle/calendar said.

This will either make you feel better or worse:

ANY SYMPTOM IN PREGNANCY (or from being human, actually) has a whole list of super scary possible outcomes or diagnosis.

Rapid heartbeat? (I can list 50 lethal examples, and bout 20 life altering ones, and over 100 illnesses... but the fact of the matter is... it can also be from just having had great sex, or climbing stairs, or reading a scary book).

Weight gain, weight loss, tingling, swelling, measuring big, measuring small, itching, shooting pains, hair growth, hair loss, bad breath, sweet breath... PICK ANYTHING and it's a symptom or possible cause of something else. ((for fun, actually try it and I'll send you a heinous list of 40 ways you're about to die... seriously, I can give you a list for HANGNAIL, so I know I can do a list for anything ;))

DON'T GOOGLE MEDICAL STUFF W/OUT A DIAGNOSIS... or you will get those oh-so-happy-death-lists.

I just spent a lot of time (to me at least, barely any time compared with the friends I made who had been there for 3-6mo) with my son in the hospital. One of the amazing things about Children's is that they give the parents a lanyard to wear around their neck that says "parent caregiver" and has photo id that gives you COMPLETE access to the hospital (barring staff breakrooms, OR's in use with someone else's child, etc.) One of the volunteers was getting me a new badge (mine being forgotten in a half doze back at my room) and said "I don't know how you parents do it." I remember blinking confused for a moment ... I had a choice??? I could NOT do it? Nope. And that's how... you don't have a choice.

No one does. If something is wrong you just "do it" whatever it is, whatever needs to be done.

But most of the time... nothing is wrong.

Don't worry and there is nothing you can do until you see the doctor and even then it's in God's hands. If there is a problem you will just deal with it. You can only face the problem if there is a problem.

You are already 7 months pregnant, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. I was HUGE! I had polyhydroamnios (undiagnosed with a first pregnancy) I gained 20 lbs (I was very small and hadn't changed my eating habits) in the first 8 weeks. I ended up terminating the pregnancy, for a LOT of reasons which I will not discuss here. My second pregnancy, I was 30 and around 3-4 months had been diagnosed, I was just then starting to take on fluid. By the time I was 6 months I looked like I was 9 months, and was already getting comments from strangers about it. At 9 months I looked like I was having triplets, and I am NOT exaggerating. I had a relative who was pregnant with twins that didn't get as big as me. WITH THAT SAID, I had scheduled a home birth, which worked for the first 7 hours. I then had to go to the hospital because I wasn't progressing. You didn't say whether you had a vaginal or c section, but to ease your fears. My daughter is now 4, she is as smart as a whip. She is uber healthy. We joked that she had up graded to the pool side uterus. I would not worry about having this condition. If I remember correctly I was 26 weeks and measuring at 31. You have NOTHING to worry about. I think for the most part, that it depends on the amount of fluid and the time. Fluid pressure is the difference. If the baby was only a few weeks old and the fluid was a lot and in a tiny amount of area, then the pressure on the baby would cause problems. I don't think this is the case.
My midwife broke my water, at home, in the bath tub. I was 8 days late. The head sat fine, no issues with the umbilical cord. The important thing is to not stress out. You are passed the mid point, I do not think that measuring a week more is a big deal. Think of it this way. Unless you know the EXACT date that you conceived, then THEY may be off with their 'measurements' Like the other ladies mentioned, don't worry about something that hasn't been diagnosed yet. AND think on the positive, at least now you get to have extra pictures of your baby :)

oh and my DD was 8 lb 9 oz. I know moms who have home birthed 10+ lb babies with no problems. You'll be fine
