Nursing Dress

So, it's a thousand degrees out, and I would really like to wear a cute little sun dress this summer. The problem is that my toddler is still nursing, and when we're out there are times when I have to nurse her. I can't do this in a dress. I tried wearing a dress with spaghetti straps and a deep V and just pulling it down around my boob, but that's really too much exposure for me. And, I won't wear a scarf or a shawl because I have too many things to carry as it is. Where do I find nursing dresses? I looked at Majamas and they have a few cute dresses, but they're around $75! For one dress! I've done searches online, but it seems like all the nursing dresses are for modest women. I don't need floor length, high-necked, long-sleeved dresses. I want a fun little dress with straps. And I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I used my belly bands as "tube tops" under a cross front sundress. It gave me a little more coverage for the bodacious cleavage I developed, but also gave some coverage from the top when nursing.

try altering some you like... just buy some snaps, cut the straps on the dress, attach snaps to the ends, and presto! Nursing sun dress. :) If you do it right, I doubt it would be noticeable. You could also sew an under-layer, just cut it to fit under the regular dress, cut holes in the appropriate places, sew it in and then when you pull down the unsnapped straps you still have some coverage.

Why not try the v neck dress and get a nursing cover to put in the diaper bag? I seen one lady do that the other day. She was wearing a really pretty dress, pulled out a BF cover and just let her 6 month old nurse. Sorry I'm not much help just a thought. Also note the BF cover was really compact looking and didnt seem to take up much room in her diaper bag. It looks like it would be fine in a larger purse to. Have fun and I hope you find something :) Oh and if its the deep v your worried about the put a nursing cami or something under it. It might be a little work, but you can still look great.

i would wear the lightest stretchy tank top you can find under a sundress that you can pull down/aside, like a wrap style or the ones you already have. i wore those cheap lightweight tanks every day when i was nursing, like from target or old navy, pull the dress down and the tank up, just uncover what you need. or under any shirt, pull the shirt up and the neck of the tank down, also uncover just what you need and your belly is still covered. plus way cheaper than nursing clothes.

Congrats for nursing your toddler!!!!! That's awesome! That said, I probably wouldn't buy any special nursing clothes at this point because it seems like a waste. A toddler can usually wait until you have privacy to nurse. So just wear the vneck sundress you have. Or many restrooms now have nursing or changing rooms. I had long hair and used that as a kind of semi cover. Why can men go around with no shirt, women can parade around with thongs sticking out from their too tight jeans or fake boobs busting out , but a mom can't nurse without worrying about being exsposed. Try it, toddlers are really quick to get on and off, I think you can donor with out flashng too much!

I thought nursing dresses looked totally nerdy! Here's what I did. i bought a few camisole tank tops from costco. they are super stretchy and very light and comfy. I would wear it under low cut sun dresses and just pull it down. lots of coverage and not hot at all. I did that all last summer while I exclusively bf my son.

alot of times i wouldnt wear a nursing bra either. i would wear a regular, strapless one, and just pull tank and bra down. good luck!

Check out www.motherwear.com. They have LOTS of cute nursing items. From bras to tops to dresses. They're in a variety of prices also. Their clothes seem to be pretty cute and stylish also.

Another thing I've done is to buy a dress that buttons part way down the front... It works pretty well also.

I was thinking along the lines of Christina W. I'd try to modify some dresses myself... With any spaghetti strap-type dress, you could simply snip the strap, sew on a snap or button, and voila! A nursing dress! Wearing a nursing cami or belly band/tube top is also a great idea for the extra coverage under the sundress, but I could see that that might be hot, or just not the look you're shooting for! If I ever get the chance to bf again, and it's in the summer, I will definitely be modifying some sundresses!

Try finding a Clothes Mentor near you. They sell gently used stylish maternity clothes. You can also see if they will buy your maternity clothes from you when you are done. They are owned by the same people that run Plato's Closet. Google them.

You're right - all the really cute nursing dresses seem to be pricey. I am still nursing my 12 mos. old and wanted a sundress. There's a Swedish brand called BOOB that makes AWESOME nursing clothes, including dresses. They are sold online or at a boutique in Hinsdale called Stockholm Objects.

I invested in a dress and a few tops to discreetly nurse my little guy who is very large for his age :) Good luck!
