OA Meetings

Forgive me if this topic was already covered. I just turned 40, I'm 40 lbs overweight and have struggled with my weight most of my life. I'm anxious and under a lot of stress right now. So to deal with the stress I eat but I also work out on a regular basis. I've tried weight watchers and it worked great for a while but I can't control my eating so WW is pointless for me.

I've been to overeaters anonymous meetings but I don't try hard enough to stick with their program. I get stressed and lose all my motivation. When I told my lil bro that I went to OA he totally laughed at me.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if OA meetings really helped them (or not) and how. I have some of the OA material, just NO motivation. Please share your story, I need help! Motivation and inspiration would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi Mom...I totally feel your pain. I've been 40-50 lbs overweight my entire adult life, done WW more times than I can remember, and always gained back the few pounds I managed to lose within months.

Try some other plans. So far it's been WW and OA, but there's lots of other stuff out there. Last October I finally found a plan that worked for me, and dropped 50 lbs over the winter. I've never felt better! My food addiction has crept back and I regained 10 of those pounds, but I know that I can lose it again easily and quickly. I travel a LOT for work, and this makes it difficult (eating yummy food in good restaurants on an expense account an average of 3 days every week), but I know when I screw my head back on I'll lose those 10 lbs and more.

Just keep experimenting with different plans. Jenny, Nutrisystem, etc. I did become a health coach for the plan I used, but I'll keep that to myself for now since I don't want this to come across as a sales pitch.

You're NOT destined to live your life overweight. There IS something out there that will work for you. You just need to find the right fit.

Is it possible to get counseling along with the programs? Someone to help unload the stress and channel the feelings to - a live person instead of food? Good for you for trying to take care of yourself.

Do you have insurance ? If so, they will probably pay for a nutritionist. I have some health issues that if I don't get my weight under control will become major. So I went and saw a nutritionist. They gave me a set amount on what I should be eating each day - broken out into breakfast, lunch, dinner, and 3 snacks. So far it's working great. I love knowing what I need to be eating and the amounts. That may help you.

A lot of programs help a lot of people but you have to find the right fit for you.
My Mom's cousin tried several but what really worked for her was TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) - she lost over 100 lbs and has kept it off.
There may be a group near you.
