hello mamas, i was wondering what you paid babysitters a hr. My husband and I both work for the same company (52hrs a week) we have a babysitter that keeps only 3 children at a time during the week for $100 a week 7am-6pm at her house ... Ive very happy with her she is cheap and wonderful with my 7 mth old. But she isnt available on saturdays so i have a old friend of mine who is a RN keep my son on saturdays while my husband and I are at work. she also is wonderful with my son and keeps him at my house which i prefer but she is charging me $10/hr...... Well me and hubby work 11hr shift on saturdays so this one day is costing us more then we pay a whole week to my normal sitter if she keeps him all day.... Now we dont ususally use her all day on saturdays sometimes my mother will keep my son for most the day but she usually has him at least 4hrs + that we have to pay her.... Is this the going rate? i dont trust just anyone with my son, and when i started using her i didnt think it would be be for a couple hrs here and there and my hubby wasnt at that time working full time but got a managers position at the first of feb.... so now with the demanding job we or having to use her every sat. Some sats its only for 4 hrs but like this past sat i needed her for 9hrs...... so should i start looking for someone else or do i tell her i cant really afford her? My cousin who is 17 and great with kids has offered to babysit for me at anytime. What do you pay a 17 yr old? I know my cousin would do good at keeping my 7mth son but im so use to having my other sitter who does everything by the book im afraid i would go crazy with worry the first few times she keeps him.... so what should i do, its not that i cant afford to pay the overpriced sitter i just have a hard time giving her so much every sat night . We just started getting back on our feet money wise since my husband got a full time job. I can think of so much more i could put that extra sitter money towards lol like a new dishwasher.... thanks in advance for the advice.
K.

We have sitters around here who are college girls making $12 an hour to babysit. $10 for an RN is a steal!

You owe your regular sitter much more then you are paying her. $10/hr on the weekend for three children is also a a reasonable price.

She's a RN right? In my mind she's worth it. Plus it's a Saturday. I think it's fair since it is a Sat. 17 y.o. vs Nurse. I'd go with nurse and not worry about the prices, especially since things are going nicely with your jobs.

I live in Missouri & charge $80/child...regardless of how many are in the family. So I sincerely hope that $100/week is one child, not for all 3. I can't imagine working that cheaply! & my rates are on the low end for established inhome daycares.....& much cheaper than state licensed facilities!

Depends. But an adult for $10 is not uncommon. Teenagers about $6-$8/hr for 2 kids. I used to get $.50/hour.

in the chicago land area the going rate is a lot more than that. your getting a great deal for the during the week stuff. I nanny for a family and they pay me $10 an hour all week long. I only work part time but when they have no school I have them. I make anywhere from $110 to $150 depending on how long the day is. I charge more for weekends. You are making overtime for the weekend why should your sitter who is doing this on her day off make less? And your need for a dishwasher in no way makes it ok to short a sitter lol. just saying she is probably sitting to make extra money for something she needs

Your regular sitter is giving you a great deal. NJ has a high cost of living but even welfare paid $120 a week for full time daycare for an infant. That was 5 years ago when I was doing social work. Around here high school kids get about $7-8 an hour to babysit. Another teenager asked $5 per hour per child. So an RN asking $10 an hour is not outrageous, just more than you are used to paying.

Hi K. - I must be living on another planet (I am...Southern California!!) because you are paying absolutely nothing for your weekly daycare. I think because you are paying less than $2/hr during the week, the wekend rate seems inflated. You are having a RN watch your children all day!! Do you know how much she could make if she picked up one extra shift per month at the hospital? I guess it's all relative. A teenager might be a few dollars per hour less expensive but since you are comparing it to the bargain rate of $1.82/hr, everything will seem high.

I pay $150 for three days for one at a daycare...I'd say you're probably getting a great deal on care for your little ones. If you're happy with her and she's providing good care, I'd keep paying her. Not sure you'd find much cheaper...and someone you're completely comfortable with.

Do you realize that when you break down $100 a week at 55 hrs you're only paying your other babysitter $2 an hour to watch 3 children? $10 an hour to have a trained nurse watch your child is cheap, she'd be paid double that. You should pay the 17yr old at least what she'd make at a minimum wage job, $7 an hour. When I used to babysit as a teenager - 10+ years ago, I made at least $5 an hour, especially if it was multiple kids, including infants.

Here in Mobile college students make about $10/hour. Paying an RN that is a bargain. You can't compare group care rates to babysitting rates, especially for someone with a college degree!

That is EXPENSIVE! What do the daycare centers near you charge? Around here they charge $6-7 and in home is usually anywhere from $3-$7. In my opinion you shouldn't pay the same for one day that you are for a FULL week, even if the other one is cheaper... know what I mean. I would tell her you can't really afford her when you find another sitter or your cousin or something... I understand my cousin has an in home daycare and my daughter goes there. I am extremely paranoid and am basically in freak out mode the first 2 or 3 weeks she is somewhere new. I can count on one hand how many people I trust with my daughter.

Will your weekly daycare lady take your son on some Saturdays and you pay her extra and your mom take her on other Saturdays?

When my daycare ladies daughter watches my daughter (for a whole day), I typically pay her $3 an hour and thats in my house. I have food and drinks for her too. Will your cousin be driving your son around? That would worry me!! Will she have friends over? I definately wouldn't pay someone $10 an hour to watch my child. Thats freakin' crazy!!! Is there any way you can come to an amount that both of you can agree on besides $10 an hour? Maybe if you tell her that amount is to steep, she may come down and give you a set price for Saturdays.

I also pay $135 a week for 2nd shift daycare. For 1st shift daycare, my lady only charges $110.
