Panama City Beach Florida

We are driving to Florida coming up. We will be staying with family in Panama City. My niece and I would really like to go kayaking, but I am TERRIFIED of sharks. Besides my family being hurt, sharks are my biggest fear in life. I can't find much information on the internet about shark sightings. Have any of you ever been, or lived there. Are there many shark sightings, or is it uncommon? Oh, are dolphins common? We will be going on a boat trip to see dolphins. My niece asked if we'd see any kayaking, but I told her I didn't think we would see them that shallow. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Nope, we've never kayaked in the ocean! We plan to stay shallow, in case we get tired :) The place we're renting the kayak from makes you take a little safety class beforehand, thankfully!!

Dolphins are very common in the gulf. You could definitely see dolphins kayaking. They are used to people, and often swim close to the shore. Sharks aren't so common. I've gone there probably 20 times in my life and have never seen or even heard of a shark being sighted there. I'm sure they exist, but they don't seem to be too prevalent. Have you kayaked in the ocean before? It's a lot harder than river or lake kayaking, be prepared for some seriously tired arms!

I lived about an hour from PC Beach years ago and went to the beach all the time. Swam in the ocean day and night and never once saw a shark there. Unfortunately, I never saw any dolphins either but also never went out on a boat trip, so maybe you'll have a better chance with that.

One of my best friends just got back from vacation in PCB. They have a condo on the beach and love to vacation there with family, including their two young sons. I have never heard her mention anything about sharks, and they've been going there for many years.

When I lived in FL, I was more afraid of alligators! I did see one in a parking lot once and thought that maybe FL was not the best place for me!

Hope you have a great vacation!

They're really rare in that area. About the only time they come inland is before a big storm.

Pensacola is the HUGE naval air station right next door to Jacksonville . Meaning there is CONSTANT air traffic. When the sharks come into shallow waters, it's known immediately, and there's pictures all over the news. And locals get ready for a big blow, no matter what the weathermen say. It's rare, though. Typically only during hurricane season do the sharks come out of the gulf and into the mile of 'near shore'.

Oh. In SoCal, surfing at night is known as Kamikaze Surfing (because that's when the sharks come out) when I was living in Pensacola, the concept made no sense to locals. Sharks come with storms, not at night! They all looked at me like I was nuts to not go in the water after dark. I was hesitant for awhile, but there just aren't a lot of sharks in the area, and if they're hunting, it's elsewhere. Then I discovered the joys of skinny dipping in phosphorescent water at night. Soooo much fun! The waves actually glow as they break, and any time you move, you and the water around you glows, too.

I FEEL you, by the by. Sharks don't B. me (but I grew up around nurse sharks, which are harmless, not reefsharks/blacktips/etc, but gators???? I cannot cannot cannot stand alligators. You will NOT find me in freshwater in the south!

I was just at Panama City Beach last week! The water is beautiful right now. On one of our trips to the beach, we saw a pod of dolphins jumping out of the water. I would estimate they were about 200 meters from the beach. Another day we saw a stingray jumping out of the water about 100 meters from the beach. Both instances we were just standing on the beach when we saw them; we were not even in the water.

Shark attacks are extremely rare, maybe a dozen in the past 12 years in the entire United States. I understand that it is more of an irrational fear than a genuine fear. Prior to the movie "Jaws," most people never even thought about sharks.
