My little tornado had and is still having a real rough month. Strep infection...was fine while her sister had her own strep then again had fevers since friday (102+) then was fever free since 4 yesterday. Last night she was grinding her teeth the entire night (new for her) and when I got her ready for school she was unable to stand up. It thought it was just cramps and told her bus not to come get her (DH was just going to drop her). She has been awake for 2 hrs now and her gait is still not normal. She is tip toeing and it looks like a palsy gait. She is autistic and is becoming high functioning and had never had a tip toeing gait before and she is unstable. I am in a panic mode right now and am thinking the worse. PLEASE has any of you experienced this with your kids or have any idea what this could be??

Already placed a call to her neurologist this morning- still waiting for a call back
Already called the pediatrician and the soonest they can see her in 4 hrs

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Her pediatrician suspects viral myositis, which is basically an inflamed muscle 2ndary to a viral infection. We just had blood drawn to check her enzymes. Poor kid it took five grown ladies to pin my little sicky down. Should get results in a couple of hours.

Thanks for all the responses it did ease my anxiety some to know it may be viral related.

My son just had a virus and he walked like this for about a day and a half because he said his muscles were sore and tight. He does not have autism. I just wanted to let you know that because I know what it is like to be in mommy panic mode. I hope you get your answer soon.

My youngest daughter has had a virus two times now that makes her either want to crawl or walk on her tip-toes....the virus causes muscle pain. It is caused Acute Benign Myositis. It can be checked with lab work, a type of enzyme will be elevated if that is elevated..
My daughter does not have autism. You should definately get her checked for the virus..
Good luck~

If her gait is off, bring her to the ER. Hopefully it's just an inner ear infection throwing off her balance. I will be thinking of you, but please don't wait. Put her in the car and bring her now.

I would suggest taking her to the ER. This could be a purely sensory "look what I can do" thing- or not. A lot can happen in 4 hours and the neuro will get her in much faster if she's referred by the ER doctor.

I'm so sorry your going through this. 4 hours sounds like a long time. Can you ask to speak to the nurse? I hope everything is okay.

Prayers headed your way. I am about to look up palsy gait and the tiptoeing. Do not panic. Is there a way that she can articulate if she is in terrible, not so terrible, sort of pain? What is the worse that you are thinking? Autism or not she is still in possession of a lot of other faculties and she might simply be kind of harboring some nervousness or other things. Grinding of teeth occurs in all humans at times so she might actually have done it sometimes whether you were aware of it or not. I know when my children were sick all I did was watch them and saw them do all sorts of things...Take her to the doctor and please let us know how it turns out. In the meantime I hope my prayers help.

Isn't the tip toeing part of the austism?
