Parental Control Settings

Personally I don't think kids NEED internet access at young ages.
Have a few educational games on the devices that they can play and disconnect the internet connection(s) while they are playing.
As for setting up - RTFM (Read The Fun Manuals) - or Google it.

My advice to you is to call your internet provider and set content controls at the server level. Then it applies to all the devices that connect to the Internet.

Otherwise, I agree with others. Just google it. There are step by step directions out there that would take me a long time to type out.

Also make you google controls for any apps you have downloaded.

ETA: I agree with others that rules and education are the most effective controls. However, I also believe that basic content blocking can help kids from accidentally stumbling on something explicit. I see a place for both approaches. They can be complementary.

Step one, explain your expectations. Step two, explain the consequences if they don't follow your expectations. Step three, monitor their activity and follow through with the consequences. Step four, hand them the device.

I can always tell what kids come from homes with parental controls, they always want to go nuts on my kid's devices. My kids drive me nuts with mooooommmm he/she is searching for ...... and won't listen to me that it is against the rules!! Parental controls are wonky at best and don't work when you kid finds access to a machine that doesn't have them.

Keep it in the kitchen, or family room or whatever, where you can see it like the TV.
Your kids will figure out how to bypass any "controls" so use common sense, eyes and ears, watch and listen.
Beyond that, TEACH them about the internet and all of it's wonders and dangers.

Have you registered the device yet? (the ipad anyway)...
It should give you step by step instructions to set up a password to log on/access the device. Once you have done that, you can go into the gear icon (general settings) and find all kinds of goodies that you can set.

Starting with a password for purchases in the app store/itunes store. Also, you'll want to toggle off the "in app purchases". For purchasing apps, there is a small description available for each one that will tell you what ages it is appropriate for. You can choose to download them or not. For browsing (Safari)... go to the controls for Safari (under your gear/general control settings--it's not in the safari app itself) and you will have options for the types of "restrictions" you want to apply. There is a "restrictions" password also that you will need to set up. This will limit the websites they can access depending upon the settings you choose.

My kids are 13 and 16 and still must ask me to input the password before purchases music or apps. They bring me their device and I will look at the rating for the item (if it's music it will indicate if there is "explicit" language) and make the actual "purchase" myself. (many apps are free, but you still have to input the password and choose to download it).

It is really quite user friendly. As for the laptop... is it an Apple product or something else?
