Pediatric GI Issue

My daughter is 3 years old. For some time now I have noticed mucus in her stool. Lately, it has gotten worse and the frequency and urgency has gotten worse. Sometimes she will rush to the toilet for only mucus to come out. I talked to the Pediatrician who did 8 different stool samples (e-coli, c-diff, parasites etc) and all came back negative. My next step is a Pediatric GI Specialist. My concern is that my husband has ulcerative colitis and I am scared to death she may have the same. Has anyone gone through anything like this??? What was your child's issue/symptoms?

What can I do next?

E., many things could be causing this. Has she been sick with a cold or GI bug lately? Certain foods can cause this too.I would definitely take her to a doctor for a full physical and bloodwork, not just stool samples. Keep on top of the doctors and request to see a specialist. If it turns out to be nothing then so be it but at least your mind will be at ease.

Please make sure the doctor considers Celiac Disease. 1 in 113 people in the US have it, and 8 out of 9 of them don't know it. I'm sure he'll check for it (because the doctors are much better about that now), but you need to ask.

I would get a GI work up inclusive of testing for Celiac Disease.
I have had UC myself and now life with a J-Pouch. It sounds similar but UC is not very common in little children like it is adults - to the best of my understanding.
If it would be UC might I suggest seeing a nutritionist and an acupuncturist. I have a friend who has a child diagnosed with UC at three and has a very difficult time. She has been able to keep the UC controlled without the UC meds and steriods through diet and acupuncture - impressively successfully I might add.

I hope you can get some answers soon. Poor baby! :(

Hi

My son has different GI issues but we have received treatment at CHOP - they are the best around for GI. We use Dr. Liacouras. Would reccomend CHOP over Dupont for GI specialties. Good Luck

Also, allergy treatment @ CHOP Dr. Spergel

Wow! Poor thing!
I REALLY think she needs to be tested for food allergies. Mucus in stool is a very common symptom of food allergies.

Also, a good quality probiotic from the health food store (or health food section in Giant or Wegmans, etc...) can only help her. There are some very good tasting ones. My daughter's been on one regularly since she was about 2 or 3 & to this day asks for one specifically every day. She loves them!

Hope she feels better soon & that you get to the bottom of it!

My son (who is now 5) has been suffering with similar symptoms for close to a year. He would poop normal one time and then the next time it would be liquid/mucus. we'also done the stool samples...and the pediatrician did a basic allergy panel (just bloodwork) to see if anything stood out, which it didn't. We saw a GI specialist at CHOP back in Feb. Since his symptoms didn't include much pain, it was basically just strange poop patterns, she came to the conclusion that he is constipated. The poop is solid and formed in his bowels...and when he goes, the poop doesn't move and liquid/mucus is getting around the poop. Made complete sense when she explained it to me! She also did an x-ray to see how much was inside. He wasn't full of it (for lack of a better phrase) but he was backed up. So for now we are doing Miralax daily and it seems to be helping. So maybe try more fiber in your daughter's diet? it could also be celiac's disease...but I think your pediatrician would have seen something by now to indicate that. It wouldn't hurt to see a GI Specialist. I really liked the dr I saw at CHOP - Dr Wong

Hi E.,

My second daughter has had GI issues for the whole first year of her life. She had mucus in her stool every single diaper change and she had diarrhea 8 to 9 times a day. Getting stool samples when the stool would soak into her diaper like pee was not fun. They tested her for everything even Celiac Disease. After all the tests they weren't concerned. Not even the Pediatric Gastroenterologist. Now she did have a milk allergy that she grew out of. I am not sure if that had something to do with it. Though, I was very careful not to give her anything with milk in it. About two months ago my daughter (15 mths now) just one day grew out of it just like they said she would and she out grew her milk allergy. This something I pretty much battled since she was born.

That was my experience but if I were in your position would still go and see the GI doctor and have them do a few tests to make sure it's nothing.

Hope that helps,

Beth

Perhaps you want to look into yeast and probiotics to see if that would be helpful. Most doctors will say "yeast" doesn't exist. Probiotics have been very helpful for our child's digestion issues.

I know of a holistic practitioner that specializes in children, her website is www.holisticfamilyhealthcarepc.com and she will order the appropriate testing and take a complete history, taking into consideration everything your child eats and every medications they've been on since birth to find the root of the problem, not just treat the symptoms. She may not be close to you, but she's worth the trip and then does phone and email followups too! good luck!
