This is a little embarrassing to ask, but I was wondering if anyone might be willing to share any tips, suggestions, or information about waxing. I have never had one, but my husband has hinted that he might enjoy it if I got a Brazilian. Yeah big surprise... a man with sex on the brain. Haha, LOL. Anyway, I don't know where is a good place to get one or if it's extremely painful etc. (I assume this is something you wouldn't want to try at home.) How long does it take to grow back and is it uncomfortable during that time?

Is shaving a better alternative? If so, any products that prevent irritation or ingrowns? Would I have to shave daily??? I hope this doesn't sound stupid, but I really don't know. I usually just trim things very short so I have never given much thought to what else I might do down below.

I'd like to say in advance... much appreciation for your candor in responding to such a personal subject.

So What Happened?

Well, my husband and I had a date night this weekend so I decided to surprise him by going hairless. I wanted to try an "easier" at home treatment first. I was going to use Nair, but remembered having a bad reaction when I used it on my legs once--- red rash and severe itching. So I gave shaving a try using some of the suggestions listed here. I didn't have time to make a special trip to find the Coochy Cream but I used a fresh razor and lots of shaving cream. Afterward I used some hydrocortisone cream for a few irritated, red spots. For 2 days after, I used Bikini Zone medicated cream to help with itchiness-- it has lidocaine for numbing. Everything was great the first day and my husband certainly liked it, but as soon as the stubble started growing back I could tell that shaving is not going to be for me. I don't know how you ladies deal with this! The stubble is fairly uncomfortable and with 2 toddlers, I don't have the time to shave my pubic region every day or so. I'm lucky if I get to blow dry my hair and put on makeup every morning! Haha. :)

Melissa S. was so honest and enlightening in her response that I've decided that once things grow back in long enough for waxing, that I'm going to go that route. It helps to know what to expect and the suggestion to take ibuprofen beforehand was great. I've been hearing good things about Dolce Salon & Day Spa. It appears to be a clean, professional, reputable place and the pricing is about what I would expect to pay.

Thank you again for all the responses! I feel relieved to know that I'm not the only one who was wondering about all this and feeling clueless. I guess it never hurts to ask... :)

Well, I've only had my legs and eyebrows waxed. And I think THAT is painful. I asked the ladies about the Brazilian wax and they said that most women have a drink before going in. So, you'll need a ride to and from the appt. Also told me that the hair would not grow back for a couple of months. That tip was totally false. My hair leg grew back just at the normal rate, except for the first couple of days. Eyebrows last longer.

Many of my girlfriends do Brazilian waxes, but just once a year before the summer for bathing suit time. They just grin and bear it. I'm too much of a wimp. Any good salon should have ice packs and aloe gel readily available right after the waxing to ease swelling/bumping reactions.

Best of luck!

Okay might sound a little oooey, but I don't like pain at all, and shaving is to much work, so I tried Nair--it really works. Don't have to worry about it getting inside of you and burning, if you don't put it inside (you put it where you want it) and when iam done if I missed a few spots i shave it then. What we do to make our guys happy!!!

Hi ladies and V.,

I sent this reply to V. - sent it private - but after reading other responses I felt I should be brave and post what I really said. :) Also added in a couple things I forgot.

So here you go...I am forever a "waxer" LOL

Hi V.,

You are asking a question that all women WANT to ask and don't dare - so good for you!! LOL

I just started waxing "down there" a year ago. Waxed eyebrows, lips and chin for years. My husband has been asking forever too and I just finally dared to do it. My sister and a couple girlfriends couldn't believe I waited for so long. And now, neither can I. It is awesome!!!

First of all, I will explain the process because no one told me and it kind of freaked me out. A regular bikini wax is fine to start with. If you have never waxed that area, it can hurt really bad. I won't lie. It hurts. But if you take ibuprofen about a half hour before your appt, it helps immensely. Once you have done it a couple times, then do the Brazilian. It toughens up. The Brazilian is waxing everything. You lay on the bed and you bring up one leg at a time into a triangle (does that make sense)... and they wax inside the lips. I know... ouch! But it is worth every bit of pain. In my opinion. And you are covered with a towel and they do one side at a time - they are very professional.

You start with going back every 4-6 weeks and as you go along, it doesn't have to be so frequent, because the regrowth isn't as bad. I have a friend that does the full bikini, not inside and she loves it. Then she just keeps up on shaving. She uses a product called "coochy" by Slumber parties. I use that too but for my legs and it is awesome. Never leaves any ingrowns or razor burn. At all. Amazing stuff.

And yes, please do not do that at home. LOL I just moved here from Utah so I haven't found someone to wax yet. But I need to. So if you find someone you love, let me know.

Good luck and really - it's definitely something to try. Not having to "trim" or shave there is wonderful.

Happy Waxing!!!!
M.

Oh PS... a neighbor of mine told me about a place in Scottsdale that serves Martini's during their pedi's and waxing. Now that's the way to do it!!! HAHA

I haven't done the waxing since the one time I got my eyebrows waxed and thought that was painful enough, but I've been told that if you go to the right place it isn't that bad. I go back and forth on shaving, it can be a lot of upkeep having to shave every other day or so. Make sure you use a sharp blade. Go with the direction of hair instead of against until your skin gets used to it, it won't be as smooth but you won't get as many ingrown hairs. The best thing I've found for shaving is like a lotion, it's called Coochy Cream and I got it through one of those in home parties (Passion or Slumber Parties) but I'm sure you can get it at Fascinations. That and the Coochy Aftershave Protection Mist, helps protect from chafing you can even use it on your arm pits. The biggest piece of advice I have is to wait until it's not hot anymore, the possible sweating makes you uncomfortable. And watch what kind of underwear you wear, I find the lacier stuff tends to catch on the stubble the day after. The big advantage for you is that you feel cleaner during your monthly, and if it makes your dh happier.

I can't really help you but I wanted to say my sister did it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and she said it wasn't so bad. She's planning on doing it regularly. She lives in Atlanta so I can't recommend a place but it's something I'm thinking about doing too. I usually shave but I might try someone else's suggestion and try Nair.

Yeah the fascination with hairlessness...gotta love it.
I am sure online there are lots of sites talking about the pro and cons of waxing (anywhere). I sure would hope you would not be shaving everyday after waxing...that is the point of waxing...not to shave so often.
There are products that are supposed to reduce razor bumps...they might work to prevent ingrowns. Find them near the hair removing products aisle. How safe are these products?? That's some other research. I am quite cautious and don't even wear perfume (after seeing enough proof that our gov't agencies do so little to protect us).
