Hi moms,

My 2 year old daughter has had moderate diarrhea for about a week now and it doesn't seem to be getting better. Normally I'd just make an appointment to take her in to see the doc., but we are between insurances right now and don't have coverage. She is not getting dehydrated and has had no other symptoms at all, just runny poo that is rough on her booty if I don't notice it right away. I'm not sure what to do, if it is possible that it is something serious I need to take her in. But if it's just a virus or something she ate, I really don't want to pay cash for the visit. She drinks mainly milk and water. We have been to the pool recently, could the chlorinated water be a cause if she ingested some? I just wanted to check and see if any of you have had kiddos with the 'runs' for over a week like this. If so... did you discover the cause, did it go away on it's own, do I need to take her in?

Thank you so much for your help!

I also highly recommend probiotics. You can buy them over the counter at any pharmacy. I'd ask the pharmacist for his/her recommendation on which one to get. I keep some in the house at all times and mix it in my daughter's milk when she has diarrhea. My pediatrician first recommended it to me when my daughter had a stomach bug; he specifically recommended it to help with the diarrhea, which lingered for awhile after her other symptoms had passed.

Any sinus drainage? That always caused my little ones to have diarrhea. Also, cutting a tooth would do it.

I'd be very concerned at her age with regard to dehydration (I'd keep giving her pedialyte, they have a powder to mix w water at Target/Walmart) or e.coli, considering she's been at the pool. A week is a long time for the runs, that's what concerns me, even if it's moderate. She should have access to a Healthystart program since you don't have insurance. I would definitely check into that on Monday, and even if not for this, to have in place until you do have insurance.

Get her on the BRAT diet and see if that helps. Be very strict with it, only what the acronym says: Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. It has to be plain, no butter or salt on the rice, no butter or jelly on the toast. Do natural applesauce, no sugar added. You can add in yogurt if she tolerates it, but don't give her the fruity sugary kind. Lots of water and/or pedialyte to keep hydrated and to regulate electrolytes. Really though, she should see a doctor, especially if this doesn't improve by Monday. I would put some vaseline on her bum in the meantime to help protect it from the irritation of diarrhea. You could also swab it with witch hazel, it's very soothing.

Have you changed your daughter's diet in anyway? Watermelon REALLY gives my kids the runs, so if you are eating that it could be affecting her. You could switch her diet to the B.R.A.T. diet and try to harden things up. Bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. But, I know it is HOT where you guys are right now so make sure she is drinking TONS of water. If she has the runs and is hot you are in for a hospital visit. I would probably call the doctor on Monday just to see if they want to see her.

Can you just call your dr and ask what their recommendation is? I always call first, 9 times out of 10, they will give me suggestions over the phone. However, I think my pediatrician said that if the runs last for more than 4 days he would want to see the child. Good luck

Get her going on a probiotic asap, they have chewable ones at least 2x a day. Is she having a lot of stomach pain when she goes? if so get her in for a stool sample salmonella can cause it or ecoli. Back off the milk if she like boost let her have that they do make it dairy free. have her eat foods that can get things slowed down Bananas, pasta, are a good thing. I went through this with dd almost a month ago she was diagnoised with c-diff and salmonella it was bad. She never got dehydrated TG but her pain was through the roof. If by monday things are still runny dont risk your dd health for a few hundred $$. Talk to the doc and let him know that you are between ins he may cut you a break. Oh and if they do a stool sample it cant be from the disposable diap it will contaminate the sample. gl I hope she gets well soon.

Calling your Dr. should be the first step. In the mean time I would give her Yo Baby Yogurt or Buttermilk (organic) She is probably getting her 2 year molars my kids always got a fever and the runs when they cut teeth. Be sure to keep her hydrated.

Want to expand on a previous response I saw...Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) is running pretty rampant in the metroplex lately. My grandmother is hospitalized right now for this bacteria, and the nurses there say it's almost epidemic in the area. It can and will affect anyone, but as with most illness, children and elderly are most susceptible. Personally, I wouldn't mess with diarrhea for more than 3 days or so, in any person. Even though you think you're getting the re-hydration, you're not, if the diarrhea continues...what you're putting in is coming right back out...you'll run into absorption issues, which causes vitamin deficiencies, etc. I wouldn't be paranoid, but definitely suggest having her seen. Hope she's better soon!! :o)

money shouldnt be an object when it comes to the health of your children!!!! how do you know she is not getting dehydrated, are you a doc or a nurse??? even mild dehydration is bad. she could have so many different things wrong with her, and it could be getting worse and worse! she could have gotten e-coli from the pool or any number of other bacteria that can live in the water, she could have Clostridium Difficile, which is an intestinal bacteria. It could be a food allergy, there are probably about a hundred things it could be...you need to get her to the ER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! trust me, i think you would rather pay the medical costs of finding out what is wrong with her rather than pay funeral costs for neglecting her medical needs.

When my two year old gets diarrhea with no other symptoms it usually is an ear infection. Mine never complains about her ears or anything and will act fine but will get diarrhea and that's how we know. Swimming can cause them too, especially if she is susceptible to them.

One idea is you could take her to the CVS minute clinic.

She could have picked up something from the pool. Try the BRAT diet--Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast---that helps with the runny stools.
If it lasts more than 2 weeks, you might want to investigate with a clinic. Hopefully it's gone soon!

When this happened to my 5 yr old son recently I started having him drink the probiotic yogurt 3 times a day and it cleaered it up. I do hope it's nothing, don't let these other moms freak you out. I don't think an ER visit is needed, but tomorrow I would call your ped and see if they will give you any advice over the phone, if not then see how much the minute clinic is compared to care now or your pedi's office.

Does it stink? My pediatrician said that my son probably needed some probiotics because he was having similar issues. It was runny and smelled FOUL! But he was otherwise symptomless. He gets this every few months, and it goes away on its own after about 2 weeks. My ped said it's a problem with absorption, and that probiotics would help. I haven't run out and bought anything specific, I just give him yogurt regularly, and he hasn't had a problem since.
