My daughter is 3 years old and refuses to go poopy on the potty. She is completely trained in the pee part. She has no problem going in her pants and sitting in it. I am getting really tired of it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have tried tons of bribes etc. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

I was having the same type of problem with my now 4 year old boy. It seemed like he was also afraid of letting the poop out. I bought some flushable kid wipes for the toilet and now he goes every time and comes and tells me about it. (yippee!)
Good luck!

You can't force a child to toilet before THEY want to. Read as much as you can and my best advice for now is to let off the pressure. Just let her go in her pullup for now and pretty soon, when she realizes that you have no agenda, she'll think it's HER idea and do it! It's like eating and sleeping... there are so few things that kids have control over... potty training is a big one and they will hang on longer when they feel pressured. As all my friends have said, "no one ever goes to kindergarten in diapers, so what's the big deal!"

Hope this helps, good luck!

M.,

I just went through the same thing with my 3 yr old. She turned 3 in June and she's been staying dry for the most part since her birthday, but she refused to poop in the potty. The pediatrician told me it was completely normal to do one and not the other. She decided on her own a couple of weeks ago that she was ready to poop in the potty, and she's been doing it every day since.

Just give her some time. She will do it when she is ready.

Take her favorite doll & put her on the potty & drop toosie rolls behind the dolls back like if she is going poop. The praise dollie & let dollie pick a prize out of the treasure box. Do that a couple of times with her dollie & she will want to get a prize as well.

Have you tried a progress sticker chart where at the end she gets something bigger like a toy? She gets a sticker every tome she poops in the potty and then something bigger ones she completes the charts--it works really well if you have the prize out by the chart where she can see it.
You can make one pretty easily and there are some you can buy and or download online. I've found this site has some greatideas and products:

I've also had a couple of friends have great results with the poopy training using M&M's as rewards. My friends daughter was the same as yours, but after only a few days of using the M&M's, she was poop trained too!
Good luck we are working on PT my almost 2 1/2 year old son right now too!

Hello M.,

What i did with my daughter was i took her to wal-mart and i asked her to pick out one toy that she liked the most. I bought it and i told her that if she wanted it that she needed to go #2 in the potty 6 times in a row. It took about two weeks but she did it and i gave it to her and i told her that she needed to keep going in the potty to be able to keep her toy.
It worked GREAT!

Be kind and loving to her as she is learning and growing.

God Bless your little one and you and your family.

Take care and enjoy Thanksgiving.

I had that problem with my two year old daughter. We keep the potty books (Once Upon a Potty and Time to Potty) on the back of the kids' toilets. So when she needed to go potty we read her books over and over until she was finished going potty. We started doing it just for tinkle, but she liked reading them so much that she sat there for so long that she pooped before she even knew what had happened.

Also there is an Elmo potty video that she loved! She watched it on her little potty and tried to go everytime Elmo did. Then got upset when she couldn't tinkle anymore.

Good luck! I hope she figures it out soon.

From what I have read on potty training, the one thing that most people/experts say is that the "pooping" is sometimes the hardest thing for kids to do. Or that they will poop in their underwear and then hide it.
All I would recommend is that you have lots of patience and do lots of encouragement (thus no bribing is needed). If you haven't already you should sit with her and read potty training books or look at potty training videos. I did this with my son (at age 2) and it seemed to have motivated him greatly. You can obtain these materials at your local library.
