I was just wondering if there were any other moms of preemies who would have any advice on transitioning into solid/stage 1 type of baby foods. His digestive track has always been his weakness so I do not want to hurt him...Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi! I had a premie who was 9 weeks early at only 2 pounds 13 ounces. I waited until about 6.5 - 7 months before starting solids. You could tell he wasn't ready. I would try a little bit of oatmeal (I found that he eventually went for that instead of the rice cereal) with a lot of milk....so more soupy than anything. Once he started figuring out how to push it to the back of his mouth we were good to go! Don't rush it. And then we moved onto applesauce first and he loved it! He's still a very picky eater though!

I would personally wait a couple more months.

is he breastfeeding? my son is 6 weeks preemie. i breastfeed him (now he is 2) i started feed him litttle of rice cereal at 6 mos and he didnt start eat soild til end of 6 mos. i homemade all his baby foods. u can buy this book "Top 100 baby purees" by Annabel Karmel. or u can buy similar book but with organic recipe because it have more varies.

as for my 2nd baby (pregnant again now) i dont plan to start soild foods til late like later than 8 mos because i plan do full breastfeed.

just start with something like avocado. and that book have 1 page part talk about weaning the preemies. any preemies at 6 mos or over 6 mos old have good tummy tho.

good luck.

Watch your son for clues that he's ready to start solids.
He must be able to sit up in a highchair.
Look for him to watch you eating and reach for your plate, he'll get excited to see your food,
if he seems hungry even though he just had a bottle or nursed an hour ago.

Your sons age is also important.
I've heard his birth date isn't his real age. The due date from your pregnancy is closer to his real age; so if he was 6 weeks early he is really only 4.5 months and that can be too early to start solids.

Most pediatricians suggest you start with rice cereal. just use a tablespoon to start, mix it with formula or breastmilk so it really loose and he can sip it off the spoon.

don't rush he'll probably take a while to catch on to spoonfeeding. Good luck

I just saw this question so I may be too late. But, my DD was 10 weeks premature and we waited until her corrected age of 6 months to try solids. She didn't do well on rice cereal so we did oatmeal and mixed it with breast milk. Remember, in the first year the main source of nutrients is breast milk (or formula) and food is more for learning and play. I have a son now too and with him we are doing baby led solids and skipping cereal completely! Good luck!
