Print Out Photos at Home or at Store

Hi - I was watching Good Morning America and heard a story about a Peoria, AZ family who had developed bathtime photos of their naked kids at Wal-mart and the photoclerk alerted the authorities who took the kids into custody for a month. I was shocked (especially because the Demaree family has 3 young daughters like I do) and now feel nervous about printing out my photos at the store. Do you take photos of your kids at bathtime? How about striking a pose in their swimsuits? I do, but am starting to wonder if I should continue. Would this story push you to print out most photos on a home printer or just avoid bathtime photos altogether?

What can I do next?

I am also aware of this story and am happy to see that the parents are suing Wal-mart. I cannot think of anyone in my extended family who does not have bath-time photos of the kids. Why was this not an issue before we could print at home? Does this mean that infants on bare-skin rugs is next? I have some great pictures of our kids (1 boy, 1 girl) in the tub as toddlers. No privates are showing so I never considered it a problem. Now as school age kids, we bathe them separately. But I still have some great bubble pictures (think Santa) that I plan to scrapbook.

there is nothing wrong with taking pictures of your kids naked. My husband did freak out a bit when my 13 y.o.found one the other day of when he was little and posted it on his facebook of himself and his brother and sister eating lolipops together in the shower when they were little. It was a rear view with all their faces turned to the camera. So cute.
We haven't printed pictures in years though, it's all on the computer (cheaper that way). But, yes that story was scary. It still doesn't seem right, but i haven't seen the pictures.

I read an article about this case and evidently there is more to the story beside the photos the couple chose to show the media.
The pictures in question (according to the article) were "posed provocitively and included close ups of genitals".
It wasn't just the clerk, but police, CPS and eventually the county attorney who found them suspect and questionable.
I would continue to develop any of my "bath-time" photos at my regular store. The prints you can make at home do not archive as long or as well as professional prints.

H.,
I was horrified by this family's situation. Can you imagine taking innocent, bathtime fun photos of your children, only to have someone (ramdom) judge your intentions and turn you in. Then, have your children ripped out of your home and taken from you?
We know these folks. This happened over a year ago. The kids still are terrified of being "taken" away from their parents. It is disturbing and unsettling that CPS has the power they do. Without any investigating or research, these children were away from their parents. There was no innocence until proven guilty here. It was unbelievable to witness and excruciating for all involved. These are good people.

The photos were no different than any other parent may take at bathtime. I know that professional studios (i.e. Kiddie Kandids, Sears, etc.) will not take naked photos of children older than 3 months for obvious reasons.

As a room of thumb, if you are going to take bathtime photos, keep it from the shoulders up, or wrapped up in their towels, and NEVER take photos of there genitals. Why would anyone anyways?????
Also, don't take photos of naked kids with adults. I guess that is a big red flag too, even if you are the parent in the photo!!!

Some of my favortite photos of my precious children happen to be tubby-time photos. I also have been following the story about the family in Peoria and am so sad for both the parents and their babies. I will continue to take cute pics of my kids, their bubble baths and swimsuits, but I will certainly be cautious in developing or sending those pics via the internet...I guess for me, I just don't want to take the chance to lose my babies for a month or more until CPS can figure out that the pics were innocent enough.

Dear H.,

WOW! I do not watch the news much. Thanks for the "heads up"! I did not realize we are in such a paranoid, prudish place as to be afraid of printing family photos in a public place.
I had heard of a sad case where some parents had photos of their breastfeeding a child developed and lost the child to "authorities" for 6 months. Sad sad sad.
