Hey mamas I've got a probiotic question. I just started taking probiotics & have seen some good results & I was wondering if any of you give them to your kids & how much. My 5 yr old daughter has had digestive problems since I stopped nursing her when she was 2. She has been on miralax since then & the doctor claims that it is safe but I want her off. I take 7 billion live cultures & they make a kids one with 3 billion but I was wondering if 5 billion would be to much for her. I reallyh want her to be able to go the bathroom without being aided by chemical medicine. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

PB8 is what our family takes. Keeps us regular AND a couple of our kids got their first runny nose in 3 years....and lasted 3 days. Our kids are NEVER sick. We use PB8, which is encapsulated, so we dump the contents into their mouths and if they get loose bowels, then they only get half of the capsule. My babies all got a little sprinkle and then I'd latch them on. We don't give it everyday, but if any sugar or dairy is in our diets, we do.

Hi M.,

Good for you for seeking out natural alternatives that will promote long-term health and wellness.

Our six year old has taken probiotics since he stopped nursing at 2.5. We open capsules and mix the tasteless powder into his yoghurt and milk. We give him about 8 billion per serving but at times his naturopathic doctor has had him on 30 billion/day with a brand called Culturelle. I would say the most important thing is to introduce a small amount then step up the dosage as needed over time. And to do it on an empty stomach before taking in a meal. Myself, I take a minimum of 25 billion a day of New Chapter's All Flora (8 pro-flora strains) and when I was nursing, I took 50-90 (split b/t two doses a day). I agree they are critical for immune boosting and times of sugar intake.

I found one at Whole Foods that's for kids and adults. It says give 2 a day for kids over the age of 2 and up to four for adults. I give my 12mo only one a day, my 4yo and the rest of us 2 a day. It helps us all out a lot. I say give it a try and if it doesn't work there's no harm done. I too would want to get off the miralax I can't see that being ok long term.

Another way to introduce beneficial bacteria to the intestines is by eating a wide variety of fermented foods. This includes yogurt (plain, unsweetened), miso, kefir (my daughter loves this), sauerkraut, pickles, tempeh and kombucha.

Never give more than is recommended of a medicine or a supplement without the advice of a pharmacist or doctor. You can also ask a person trained in the use of probiotics. I can't think of what their title would be. Some health food type stores have them. Perhaps a nutritionist?
