I am a mom who spends time online and also with lots of people, especially with my kids and their classes/events etc. I have been trying to figure out if it makes sense to bring the PTA/PTSA communications online into a web community? I feel like it is the answer, allowing the parents who can't come to the meetings to participate from their desks as well as opening paths to creative and modern fundraising that happens by letting local businesses place ads, sell books through affiliate stores, and so much more.

Some parents less familiar with "Web 2.0" seem intimidated by it...what do you think? Would this help your PTA/PTSA? I'd like to hear some feedback and thoughts about this before putting too much pressure on our PTA to let me do something like this...

What can I do next?

All of our schools PTA's ans PTSA's are paperless so they are online.
YOU should volunteer to begin it at your schools.. Get a committee together willing to run the site. .

At all of our daughters schools they had a Sunday night weekly update with all events. This was the weekly schedules, special events, special practices, cancellations.. etc.. Wed.. they did shout outs to congratulate and recognize the students, teachers etc..

It works great.. For families with out internet, the monthly newsletters can still be mailed to them.. We also had a group of parents, that refurbish computers and try to match them up with these families..

Several of our children's PTAs have used yahoogroups to keep in touch with parents about events. A listserv seems to be something people are fairly familiar with, can get behind, and they can choose how they get messages. It works for us.

As long as those without PC's don't have to feel like they are missing anything it would be fine. But if there were issues exclusively handled by computer only that would be a problem.

I think it might be a great idea but think it depends on the area... For instance my kids principle is so behind the times, otherwise a great guy, that I am sure he would ax it right away! I am not too familiar with it but I always welcome new ways to help parents keep in touch and help out the way they can! Good luck!
