Puppy in Heat??

Oh yes she is in heat, in another day or two she will start to bleed. you will have to use kotex and underware. (get them at a pet place)
Keep her in the house and AWAY from other dogs by about the 7th day. These can be a pain in the butt, but if you don't want puppies keep her away from all fences ect.. Any male dogs with balls. They can breed through just about anything, believe me. =[

I would say she is in heat. Usually the first heat there isn't much bleeding, especially in a smaller dog. We have a 7 month old boxer pup who is also coming into heat. She has been cleaning herself a lot lately too. It sometimes lasts a couple of weeks, so be prepared. If she starts to bleed, they make female diapers for them that you can order online or get at Petco. I hope this helps.

It definately sounds like she is in heat, first their vulva swells then they start to bleed and are receptive to the male. Unless you want puppies do not let her go outside unattended. Irecommend getting her fixed asap. You increase their chances of getting breast cancer when they are not fixed. Also,it is a lot less hassle.

hi. Unless you PLAN to breed in future- spay her and save yourself a lot of headache! we have a female mastiff. before we decided to spay her we had hoped to breed her so endured several heat cycles. Unfortunately by the time she was old enough to breed (age 2 at the EARLIEST!)we found out she had genetic back and neck issues that for us made it unethical to create more babies with the same issues. UGH! ANYWAYS...i am no expert by any means, but i had to get dog underwear (on-line or pet store) and put a maxi pad in it and change it throughout day just as you would as a woman! EWWWWww gross! I know! So as for my dog---I knew she was in heat because she was bleeding. I think their "girl parts" do swell as well. can't remember that clearly. Our mastiff is an inside pet, so the dog panties were necessary! if your dog is an outdoor dog you may not notice as the bleeding isn't a bunch.

I just read another post about this---and yes, definately do not let her out alone!! dogs will come from blocks away and do almost anything! we had a dog that would lay by our door at night, stick his nose in our cat door and one night i felt sorry for him as he was out in our back yard just crying for her. Nature is strong and instincts just take over! that poor fella just didn't know what to do w/himself! some would be mad, i felt sorry for the guy!---My vet stresses that at 2 they are still only like a 14 year old us. allowing her to breed at a young age could actually be very harmful! male dogs have been known to get over 6ft fencing and dig under fencing!!! be careful w/her while in cycle! again...good luck w/all that stuff!

I have an 8 month old female cocker that I just had spayed. I am a newbee to puppies too, but my vet suggested having her spayed before she started going into heat. When I took her in for her surgery, the vet mentioned that her "parts" were swollen, so I had brought her in just in time. So, I think you may be on to something.

I board dogs from my home and yes it could be she is in heat you will have to see how long she is swollen, and it also could be a urinary infection.
But please know that there are alot of dogs out there that need homes, so please have her fixed, so she won't have puppies. lori

Yup, it sounds like she's definitely ready for love.....
We bred blue healers when I was young and this is a sure sign of estrus. Keep her inside or on a leash at all times for the next week or so, she may be acting normal now, but get her around a male dog and it will be all over! Are you planning on breeding her? Is there a reason she isn't spayed?

Sounds like her first heat cycle. They will also bleed. (I know strange to think of an animal having a menstrus... LOL!

Yes, the other posts are correct. I just want to share that those puppy panties are expensive. If you plan on having her spade after her heat, you might try newborn baby diapers. Our new dog was too big for the panties we had, so I put the velcro tape diapers on her with a hole cut out for her tail. They worked great as you can take them off when she goes out and put them back on when she comes in. If she does get blood on anything, hydrogen peroxide with bubble it out.

Sounds like your pup is in heat. Nothing to worry about. If you intend to have her spayed, this would be a great time. Another sign of Estrus is leaking of blood or similar fluid from her "girl-parts". If you're concerned it might be other than her first heat cycle watch for signs of infection:(fever, lethargic behavior, loss of appetite, redness (would be obvious), and visible pus or odd odor (again, would be obvious-- you don't need to put your nose into her stuff!))
This is also a great time to keep your pup in the yard where males cannot access her. It is unhealthy for pups to get pregnant until over one year of age.

I work part time at a Labradoodle kennel in Oregon. I have worked for 3 years in a Retail Dog kennel, and also have raised 2 guide dog puppies for the blind (both girls). It sounds like your puppy is indeed in heat. Generally a dog can come into heat somewhere between 8 months and 2 years. Just like people - dogs are all different. You mentioned that she is swollen and pinkish in the back and that is a HUGE sign she is. Also to be sure, you can take a baby wipe to her back side and run your finger slightly parting the girl parts. If it has a redish tint or you can see a small amount of blood (could even be a drop size) she is in heat. You can also check areas where she rests, there might be small pea size or smaller size of blood drops on there. There might only be one spot of blood on the blanket where she rests. Again each dog is different. It's highly recommended to keep her at a boarding center while she is in heat. Or keep her entirely inside while she is in heat - which might be hard to do. This would be of course to avoid any surprise babies. I would also recommend that if your intent is not to keep her for breeding but for companionship, that you go ahead and spay her. She will be healthier in the long run and you won't have to deal with her coming in heat again. I hope this helps. :)

Yes she is in heat. the rule of thumb is a week coming in, usually bleeding and swollen, a week ready, not bleeding and still swollen and a week going out, bleeding and swollen. the dangerous time of course is the middle week. Most dogs come in heat every 6 to 8 months. Females can be bred as early as 6 months. If your male is intact, don't let them be together. keep your female inside, say in a laundry room if she is not used to being inside. you can have her wear underwear if you don't want the bleeding to get on your carpet. they actually have stuff like that for dogs (hence laundry room that can be cleaned up) take her out on a leash to go to the bathroom. A crate at night is great. If your male is not fixed then you can alternate putting him in the crate when you let the female out, supervised of course. she can dig out and other males can dig in or scale the fence. It is a lot of stress and work but if you don't want puppies and if she is still a puppy (most dogs skeletal systems aren't really mature till they are 2 or so years old) then you have to do this. there are products the vet can give her that can terminate a pregnancy but they can have dangerous side effects. If you don't plan on being a breeder, please spay your dog.

She's in heat, trust me I have 2 Labs. 1 male 1 fem.and they have had 2 litters of about 12 pups each time. The female was just spayed and she had the same signs when in heat. They usually go into heat about every 6 mths. She will probably start spotting a little so get a pair of boxers (underwear) and stick her tail thru the button hole. You can tighten up the loose material w/ a safety pin, it works great! If she has painful cramps and is moaning just give her 1/2 a Tylenol. :)

Sounds like in heat to me. I've raised a number of dogs throughout my life, and those are signs of heat. Be sure to keep her seperated from the "boys" and off the furniture. Things may get messy. You may wanna consider puppy pads for this purpose. The first heat is usually between 6 and 12 months old for dogs, but they aren't good parents at that age!

I do not know a lot either but that sounds like she is in heat. Is she wanting to go out more? I know that they can bleed a little.
We have a beagle, and he is great. But let me tell you I know when other female dogs are around... He howls...

I do believe that she is in heat. I've had two litter of puppies and boy what fun! When my female border collie went into heat it was our male that let us know first. However the bleeding was the bigger indication. We used the biggest diapers for kids on her.. it was cheaper and much let mess then having to wash some dog diaper. But If some one has actually used one... you might want to... my ex was cheap and wouldn't even try the dog diapers. We would just slit a little hole for the tail and would only take if off for going "potty" and at night when she was in her cage and could clean her self. Which is pretty important to do. There was a few times that she would find a space under the desk and would chew apart the diaper... talk about a mess!

If you are not planning on breeding her.. think about getting her spade. They are fairly cheap.

I hope some of that helps. You will know for sure in the next day or two if she is in heat because of the blood.

Yep :) That's heat for ya. Also... in the next few days she may start to drip blood so watch out for that on your carpet and furniture!! There are great doggy diapers, disposable or cloth ones that you put liners in at the pet store. If you dont want it to happen again, its time to get her spayed! Also... be really careful around male dogs especially in about 10-14 days. Their bleeding usually lasts about a week but after its over is when they will breed. You should really keep her confined about a month so you will be safe. Good luck! :)

Yes she is most likely in heat. I have raised and bred dogs most of my 28 years and if it was an injury or illness she would have other symptoms. you may have noticed already or should soon notice small pinkish spots after she has sat on something light colored. that is her little doggy period and nothing to worry about. she should be back to normal in a week or so and if you had planned to get her fixed once she is out of her cycle it would be a really good time. good luck.

yes I would say she is in heat..... you might also notice a tiny bit of blood and you can get doggie diapers for that so it doesnt get on your carpet and other things. Are you planning on breeding her? if not I would get her fixed.

Sounds like she's in heat to me. I've seen dogs in heat but never got close enough to see if she was if she was enlarged. Mostly I notice that there is a discharge which explains the cleaning. When my brother's dog was in heat he kept her in his room because he also had a male dog and his bed spread had reddish smears on it.

I would say that yes, Jett is in heat. Our female dog does the same thing, even after being spade. Her breasts used to swell so much that it appeared she was nursing! and her female parts become swollen and distended. You will want to be aware that she will have discharge and if you want to avoid that on the carpets and furniture, she will need to stay outside for awhile. or if she is mellow enough to deal with it, a doggy diaper can be used. If she is put outside, make sure she is secured in a kennel where the males cannot get to her and she cannot get free, because otherwise, you will end up with a litter of mutts. We ended up getting Zena spade because it was a pain to deal with it and we knew we didnt want puppies. As cute as they are, they are also alot of work and you have your hands full with the girls right now!

You guessed right. She may be fidgety and there is also the chance she will bleed (like a period). I used to put old underpants on my Golden Retriever with a hole cut for her tail so she wouldn't get blood all over everything. You can buy special sanitary napkins for dogs at specialty pet stores.
One note...if you don't plan to breed your dog, do consider having her spayed. It eliminates the chance of an accidental preganacy—you'd be amazed how quickly two dogs can connect—and unwanted puppies. It also reduces her chance of having reproductive health problems later in life. Dogs can get ovarian cancer.

yes she is in heat and it will last or can last up to 3 weeks. They will continue to clean them selves but not a good idea to let her lick the kids hands, faces etc. She will be fine but if you want to keep her in an area where the blood won't damage carpet it may not be a bad idea. She can go out side to play and use up her energy, exercise will be good. Yes, it sounds like she is in heat. She will become swollen and red, and she will clean herself often (be glad... the alternative is messy). You may also notice her dragging her butt on your carpet.

Just try to ignore it, and it will come and go once a month.

I have a Papillon and when she first went into heat she had the exact same signs as your dog. She has been in heat twice now. I advise buying a bag of Premie diapers and using those. She is swollen because she is licking alot (because she is bleeding) the diaper will help from chapping and causing her pain. Just cut a hole in the back of the diaper and let her wear it. Your puppy is in heat. I have two girl puppies and thats about when they go into thier first heat. She doest need to go to the Dr. If you need to they have cloth like diapers for dogs in heat and they even have pads for them. Pet smart or any other pet store will have them.

My puppy went into heat for the first time when she was seven months old, too. I didn't know what it was, and I did the stupid thing and took her to the vet. We were freaked out, because she was constantly licking herself, and there was blood all over our bedspread (she sleeps with us at night). I didn't know what was going on, so my husband made me take her (he was impressively worried about the dog he doesn't like). So like an idiot, I took her to the vet, and I got this patronizing smile, a couple chuckles, and was told she's just in heat. She had the swollen female parts, also. And she stinks! Yikes! It lasts for a couple weeks, and usually occurs about every six months or so.

Sounds to me like she's in heat. She's the right age and the swelling and licking is normal--for 21 days if I remember correctly. She also will start bleeding- some dogs more than others so good luck there. Don't let her out alone--:)

Sounds like she is just starting her heat. In a few days she will start to bleed and will need some sort of pads. They sell them at PetCo and Pet Smart, and probably other pet stores. She'll probably bleed for a few days, taper off, go back to normal, then go into heat again in a few months if not spayed.

not only is it important to spay your dog to avoid having to deal with diapers and unwanted puppies...the more times your dog goes into heat, the higher the chance of you dog getting mammary cancer in the future. if you arent breeding, spay as soon as possible!

hi C., Yes, it sounds like Jett is coming in. IT is a week coming in a week in when they will present themselves to males and a week going out. If you aren't seeing a discharge in 2 weeks I would check with my vet. My boxer just had a litter 7 months ago and I kept a male and a female. I had a few problems. One puppy died, and 1 has diassabilities. My best advice to avoid heartache and alot of extra work and finance is have her spayed soon. Each time my girl has a heat it's worse. What a mess.

It sounds to me like she's in heat--and it's not unheard-of for it happen that young. Has she had any bloody spotting? That also occurs during heat. If she's an outdoor dog, you might not notice it, but if she's indoors, it's quite possible that you will find unexplained blood spots around the house. They do make little diaper things to protect your home during this time.

Jett is most probably in her first heat. The first one is usually the longest....maybe up to 3 weeks and usually there is a messy reddish discharge that will eventually show up. Get online and do some research regarding a dogs "Season". Keep her away from "intact" males or you will have puppies in a couple of months and she is too young for a litter. If you don't plan on breeding her, make an appt. to have her spayed. Good Luck!

If your puppy at heat at age 7 months well, she may not be fully mature to have all the affects of an adult being in heat. I currently have a female chow cross of 2 years in heat and she is like bleeding everywhere? Have you notice it yet? If not then perhaps her body is just acting out it. like my D.O.G did at that age.. no real evendence of being in heat but still there.. she is young and too young to have puppys..not mature enough..so tell your man that she is too young lol.. ok! it could be not a good time to wish upon puppys for her very own! I am not no vet..but I love dogs and had them all my life..fixed or not fixed ..and through my experience I say she is too young but is also at age to have swallon places so to speak that is the beginning of her future "in heat stage" so please, like I said I love dogs and any animal that is upon our earth.. but puppys or kittens are in high population so if you dont plan to breed her to make profit for a true real breed..the please get her spaded Like I am going to do to mine this spring. We all know the world dont need no more dogs,cats whatever the demstic animal is. there is too many dogs and cats that are wanting homes in the ASPC and other places.. so please I hope you concider this.! I am not sure if thats what the answer you wanted.. but its the belief I have in our beloved amimals that we keep as pets.. and the consideration of those still begging for a home from a loving family. ..Take care!
