Question About fruit...yes, Fruit!

Why is it that fruit actually makes me more hungry than I was prior to eating it? When I was in a weight loss program, our leader used to say, grab an apple if your hungry, the fiber will quell you hunger.....REALLY? Without fail, everytime I eat fruiit of any kind, I am so stinkin' hungry afterward. I drink a ton of water too, so I know dehydration isn't an issue. I am trying to maintain a good weight as I roll into my 8th month of pregnancy and the banana I just ate left me nothing more than an after taste, not a satisfied tummy! Anyone else feel this way?

What can I do next?

You need some protein to balance out the sugar spike.
Peanuts, nuts, cheese are wonderful snacks.
It's not a snack but steel cut oatmeal is a great complex carbohydrate that will help keep you from getting hungry again for a long time.

Try to do Fruit and a protein.. Like Peanutbutter and banana, or apple etc.
That happens to me also, sometimes I am more hungry after eating fruit. Why, because it is a food that your body can process easily.

It's the sugar. It makes your insulin spike, and when it falls you feel intense hunger. Look for low glycemic foods that will keep your insulin from rising. (This is why people never feel hungry while on the atkins diet.) (And yes, I'm the person who posted yesterday looking for tips on how to stop eating all the time. I know all the facts, I just can't seem to stop shoving food in my mouth even if I'm not hungry.)

Has it always been that way for you? I am no nutritionist, but my first thought is that it is just because you are pregnant. Jeez, I was so stinking hungry when I was pregnant! Kudos to you for proactively eating healthy, I wish I would have.
Anyway, I have not experienced that, but I also feel that protein is what fills me up. If I am starving, I will drink a big bottle of water and then have something like protein, like a hard boiled egg, an apple or banana with peanut butter (or just a spoon full of peanut butter, lol!), some tuna on cucumber slices, etc. Maybe try that? Or try veggies...I am doing the weight loss thing right now, and a gigantic plate of spinach or lettuce (4 cups worth) with an ounce of turkey, 1/2 a tomato and a drizzle of balsamic is about the same amount of calories as a large banana but way more food, ya know?

The sugar content in the fruit increases appetite. Fruit is nature's dessert. It should be a small part of a meal, but never the meal itself.

It is a good way to get some quick energy but without also eating a fair amount of protein, your blood sugar levels will plummet which sparks a hunger response, even if you don't actually need to eat.

Its probably bc your pregnant. If your hungry eat. You need the calories and nutrients and vitamins for 2. Almost everything you eat goes to the baby so you need the extra for your own benefit. There is none if your always hungry eat something with fiber. Cereal toast apples you need to eat to get the right amount of vitamins for yourself as well as baby

Because some fruits raise your sugar and consequently, your insulin levels. I'd honestly try some carrot sticks or celery or red pepper strips with hummus; fruit needs to be balanced with a protein. You're better off with a bit of cheese or some almonds to go with the fruit or veg.

If you want an easy reference, look up The Zone Diet and look for 'favorable' carbs; they'll stay with you longer.

And if you are pregnant, for heaven's sake, eat and eat well! Your baby is using up a lot of the energy and nutrition you are getting. Baby needs a bit of protein also. :)

my body does not do well with fruit. i have insulin issues though. if i eat an apple its much better though. try eating 2 at once. and if your snack hungery this is a much better option than a bag of chips or candy bar. if its meal time make a fruit PLATE for yourself. perhaps your more hungery than a banana perhaps your so hungery your ready for a bowl of fruit ?

Fruit plus a handful of nuts. Fruit cut up and put in yogurt. I always pair a banana with a glass of milk. Yep, you need to add some protein if you are expecting the fruit to be any more than a snack.

There are some diets out there that favor cutting out all fruit, on the basis that it contains sugars, but I would never do that -- there is too much benefit in fruit (vitamins, fiber, pectin, certain enzymes that are great for us) to treat it as if it were merely candy and had no other positives. Do eat it and eat a lot, but add proteins.

And yeah, the fact you're pregnant means you need more food, period, so you're hungry and it's not just the fruit's fault....

yes.. and also depends on the the type of fruit.. when it's a high glycemic item such as a slightly over-ripe banana, mango or pineapple... then that raises my insulin and in turn, blocks fat and then once my insulin drops.. I am HUNGRY AGAIN!! if you are gonna eat fruit, I would shoot for the lower glycemic items such as an apple.. However, add some nuts or something or even some string cheese. I find this helps curb my hunger..
For the most part, fruit smoothies are the same thing.. unless, I add spinach to them or other greens, the smoothie won't hold me for very long..

I have always told people fruit is not a meal. It does not tide you over, it digests very quickly and is gone.

A lot of parents give their kids some fruit when they come in from school and expect that to fill them up and stay with them until it's dinner time. That's not realistic. They need some complex carbohydrates for that to happen. They take a lot longer for our bodies to digest. So if you do "want" some fruit, let's say you want a banana, which half a banana is an adult serving, then you need to eat something else with it that is going to stay with you longer.

Good answers below.

Eat a little protein with it and it's the perfect snack. Nuts, a little cheese go perfect with that apple and will keep you full longer.
