Question Regarding Tipping

I go to my local AVEDA hair salon. It clearly says "ENJOY OUR TIP FREE ENVIRONMENT", but I noticed customers still tipping, so of course I did ! I left wondering what is the appropriate thing to do. At the time I was pleased with my hair and left each person a 20% tip that touched my hair e.g. the colorist etc. I don't want to insult the stylists but at the same time always trying to watch the pennies so don't want to be tipping if it's not required. What would you do ladies ? On another note since I've left I've noticed my roots still show !?!?

What can I do next?

I don't go to salons anymore, when I did, I didn't tip because I really didn't know I had to. I figured I am paying for the service, a tip seems redundant to me. I am sure you paid a ton of money just for the service and then you tipped 20% to everyone that touched your hair!! Wow! I wish I worked there :0) I think that if there is a sign that says "enjoy our tip free environment" you should have not felt compelled to tip. I don't think tipping is ever really required, it is the result of being pleased with the service you received. Stylists make a good amount of money, unlike waitpersons, who really need the tips to offset their extremely low pay. You also stated that you noticed others tipping, don't try to keep up with the Jones' because they are probably broke!!

It is a school and no tipping is not expected or an obligation. But to me if you really felt that student did a good job and do truly deserve a tip, then give what you feel is right.

My rule of thumb is if you like the service you receive - tip. If not, don't. I've always been generous to my nail salon and hair dresser - with that I usually get the first seat / appointment without waiting.

I don't really know what I would do about the tip situation, I would think a small tip would be appropriate if you were very happy with your hair. But, then again, if it says no tips.. Keep your money!
If your roots are still showing, call them back and explain that you noticed it once you got home. They should be able to fix it at no charge.
Good luck! =)

They shoud not be accepting your tip! That is included in their pricing. I have tried to tip before and they told me it was not accepted. Also I recently quit them because I was always dissatisfied with my hair color. If your roots are still showing I would go back!
