Good evening all! I had a Mirena IUD placed in April of 2009. I have had some issues with it since it was inserted. I bled for 8 weeks afterward, then when I had a period I would spot for around 2 weeks. I am still doing that AND it seems that I am getting a yeast infection every month. Although this is embarrassing to say, I have noticed that I am spotting after "alone time" with my husband as well. I told my doc about all of these issues. She said that I should not be spotting after sex. I had an ultrasound that showed that the IUD is still in place. I am going to take one pack of birth control pills to see if I can regulate my hormones. So my question is, have any of you had the same issues as far as spotting/bleeding after sex or recurring yeast infections? I am giving this one more month. If things do not drastically improve I am having it removed!! Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.
p.s. There is not ANY chance that the yeast is an STD. Just thought I would throw that in!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I am still having issues with spotting even while taking birth control pills. I have decided to have it removed if I don't stop spotting in 1 week. I am researching non-hormonal birth control methods at the moment. Thanks to all of you for taking time out to answer me! You guys are the best!!! God Bless!

I had Mirena inserted 7 weeks ago and im still bleeding as well. I have not had an infections, but it seems as if the bleeding is just getting worse. I was wondering if i could take hormone pills or something to make it stop. I know 2 other people who have the Mirena and they had no problems like this. They bled for maybe 2 weeks and then havent since. Im trying to be patient but its very hard and its very depressing. I will be seeing my doctor this week to make sure its still in place. Here is my e mail let me know if the birth control pills helped you at all, i may give them a try. mrshart29yahoo.com.. Thank you

I am 57 now and its been many years since I had an IUD, but when I had a low grade fever for a month and had to have it removed. Best decision ever!!!! My advice is to have it removed. You'll be glad you did.

Hi Jennifer,
I have had my Mirena in from Dec 2007 until the present. Last year I began having problems out of it. Also after my alone time with my husband I have been spotting also. The good thing about it is that it has helped with my period. I use to have major cramps and I would stay on for 6-7 days and some times 10 days. But I have to go in to see my GYN about this problem that I am having.

I had the Mirena IUD for over 2years and I spotted every single day. I had to always wear a pad because I never knew when I would have a "heavy day". I didn't really have regular periods though. I don't remember any yeast infections. Everyone kept telling me that the spotting would stop, but it didn't. So I had it taken out.

i had the same problem although i had to have my removed after 8 weeks because i was bleeding very heavy like i would go through atleast 6 to 8 of the very thick pads and the doctors said it was ok but i was always tired and had no energy. so i told her i couldnt do it anymore. and i had a yeast infection almost the whole time i had it. so when i went back for the 8 week check up and i told her she needed to take it out. she took it that day and i stoped bleeding 3 days later. the doctor said sometimes it just doesnt agree with some people maybe that is you case to it doesnt agree with you body..

I also have Mirena. On occassion I will get some spotting after sex but this is not a normal occurance. My periods are super light very infrequent and not regular- it seems the spotting occurs around the time I will some start a cycle. I have not had any problems with it at all and had it since right after birth of my youngest child (she is 4). It seems things are not going well with you. Did you talk to your doctor about possible other causes of these symptoms? Maybe it is not the IUD at all. But it could be- not everyone does great with every form of birth control. You may need to get it removed. Hope this helps :)

ps- oh I forgot- I don't remember bleeding or spotting for very long after having mine put in. Wow some of your responses are horror stories. I would say i was the super lucky one I think i maybe bleed for about the same as a regular period- it was just heavier at first. I am having mine removed and another put in soon so hopefully I am just as lucky this time!

LOL I appreciate you just throwing in the STD thing. I've had Mirenta for about a year & a half. I bled too for approximately 8-10 weeks after the initial placement. Prior to placement of Mirena my cycles were horrible. Now my MD told me that I could possibly bleed for 12 or more weeks after inital placement & the months thereafter mycycles may or may not decrease/increase or diminish, but my md said that most women decrease or diminish after app 12 months or more. Well all I can say is that I assume that I was one of the VERY LUCKY ONES, whereas I stopped the heavy spotting after no more than 8 wks & eventually begain to have no bleeding after the months from 8-14. Like I said I will verfy that for myself (and all women are different) since at the very least of month 9-12 I've had little or no cycle, from month 12-16 I had no spotting or even a cycle. NOW my dr told me it happens to different women at different times..

I'm pretty sure my experience with Mirena wont help but I truly hope it does. I truly truly hope that everything is ok & it begins to give you all the benifits it has given me... I love it, especially after about the first 8 or so months.

for the time being you will be in my prayers so please let me know how things are going. YOu have my blessing &prayers.
