Hey all,

I'm scheduled to have the Mirena IUD put in on Wed. My neighbor has it and loves it but of course in the past couple of days I've heard some crazy stories. Anyone out there have any to share good or bad. I just had my second a daughter at the end of June. My husband and I don't think we want anymore but we decided to keep the attitude of "never say never." Just curious what other people have to say! Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

ended up getting the IUD today. Talked all things over with my Dr. read up on more info and decided it was good for me. If I end up hating it they said no prblem, they'll just take it out and search for another option so, well see. Thanks everyone for your help, I really appreciate it!!

Got my Mirena in March '09. I experienced mild discomfort on insertion, but in the scheme of things, no big deal.

I had light bleeding for weeks at a time for the first six months. It is now month eight and I can't remember when I last bled.

I am no more moody than a normal woman who is the married mother of two that works full time outside the home. I have no acne (I don't usually, anyway). My sex drive is better than usual. I have lost weight (due to diet and exercise).

I recommend you NOT tell your husband about the strings. My husband doesn't know anything about it and has never mentioned a word about it. I am sure if I told him, he'd say he feels it.

Overall, I would recommend Mirena. My doctor warned me to be patient with it, as it would take time for my body to adjust. She was right. Finally, I feel like it is worth it because I don't think about my period or birth control anymore!

Take the horror stories with a grain of salt. Everybody experiences things differently.

Hi S.,
I got Mirena put in about 10 months ago and I still spot every month here and there, and I still get cramps...But it's much better than my heavy periods from before I had it in. Incertion was a bit painful, but bearable. I am one of thoes 'Lucky" women who has gotten pregnant on the pill, depo-shot, norplant and had a condom break too! God really wanted me to have my children I guess! Anyways, this was my last shot at birthcontrol and so far so good. My insurance covered everything but $45. Make sure to check on that. The only thing for me is that my uterus tilts and I can't feel the string to make sure that it's still in place. I just have my Dr. check for it when I get a checkup. (they have to do an ultrasound) No big deal and better than trying to fit everyday b/c into my already hectic life. Good Luck, take some advil before you go, and plan on some down time for the rest of the day!

I was in the exact same scenario and had one put in. I've had it two years now and have no doubts it was a great choice. I've had no problems. My sister also has one and is actually on her second one with no complaints. With my sister she had hers for about 6 months and had sporatic lite periods; then her peiods ceased to exist completely. Mine were very sporadic for about a year and I was starting to get irritated that mine weren't completely gone like my sisters and then bye bye went them for good for the last year. Though about every three months or so I may have something that resembles an extremely light period that I don't even have to do anything about; it usually is taken care of after I have relieved my bladder. And if all else fails you can always have it removed easily.

I got Mirena in Dec 2008 after 2 kids and have not had any trouble. And the greatest thing is that I DO NOT have periods!!!!! I couldn't even tell you what my cycle is!!!

You may spot for a couple of weeks but after that it should be smooth sailing!

hello S., i have had the mirena for 2 yrs and love it! nothing to remember everyday,no more periods or if i do its just spotting. when my 5 yrs are up i will do the mirena again without a doubt. yes when the doc put it in it hurt but nothing worse than childbirth. i have two friends who also have it. one had hers pulled out due to the fact they are trying for another baby, and the other one also loves her mirena. her only down side is she has to take another form of birth control due to her hormones, i think its the yaz birth control. i would suggest anyone who has a busy life and its tired of poping the pill to do the mirena. yeah you can do the "ring" but you still have to remember to change it every week, who wants to do that? good luck with your choice.

S.,
PLEASE talk to your doctor! There is a lot of misinformation floating around in here! Mirena is not like the IUDs of the past. It does not cause abortions. I am prone to anxiety and depression. I loved Mirena and never had a problem! (I had major issues with the pill.) I had Mirena for almost two years. I spotted for a few days and then I never had a period again! When we decided to have another child, I had Mirena removed and six weeks later, I was pregnant! They're not kidding about the quick return to fertility! Also I asked my doctor about the chance of getting pregnant with Mirena. She told me she has inserted hundreds of them and has never once had a patient that has gotten pregnant. That was good enough for me! If Mirena is inserted correctly, there shouldn't be an issue. Make sure you have a doctor who has done this many times and knows what s/he is doing! I highly recommend Mirena. Good luck. I know it's not for everyone.

I've had Mirena since May of 2007 and I love it! The last actual period I had started the day it was inserted and while it lasted for 6 weeks, (yeah, ew) I haven't had one since. I've had spotting that lasts about 24-48 hours. The mood swings I experienced on traditional birth control are no more. And hey, if you decide to have another baby, it's easily removable and it's good for 5 years.

I've had the Mirena for almost 4 years now and overall, I love it. The only bad thing I could say was that it hurt a little going in, and for about 6 months, my husband said that sometimes he could feel it. My Dr took a look and pulled on the strings a little and fixed it. Now it is totally comfortable, easy, and I don't have any periods at all-- which is wonderful! My husband and I have recently talked about maybe having one more child so the non-permanance is great too! Good luck :)

I personally did not like it because I bled for 6 months straight. Not heavy, but daily spotting. The doc said it would get better, but it never did. I also did not have a sex drive, but I know a lot of b.c. can do that b/c of the hormones. Mirena is not the only b.c. that took my sex drive away.

However, I think you should just try it. If you've tried others and haven't had any complications then it won't hurt to try. It's painless and simple and you don't have to worry about it after it is in. The Doc can always take it out later if you are experiencing side effects like I was.

I have had the Mirena for 10 months now I finally stopped spotting about a month ago and haven't had any bleeding at all since I use to have real HEAVY periods, but also didn't have one every month The very first month I did experience mood swings and headaches and cramping, but after my body got use to it I was fine My insurance did not cover any of it so check with your insurance first If your insurance does not cover it it is cheaper for you to directly order it from Mirena than through your Dr's office and they can ship it to you or to the Dr My husband complained about being able to feel the strings so I had to have them trimmed other than that I have not had any problems You might want to also consider the copper IUD It lasts for 10 years and it has no hormones

I had mine put in about 3 months after my daughter was born. At the time it seemed like a good idea because I wasn't sure if we wanted more kids or not (even though it had taken 5 years to get pregnant). I had extreme vaginal dryness and no sex drive at all. You could have had the chip n dale dancers in my room and I wouldn't have cared. The upside was no periods. The downside was it severly affected my marraige. I had it removed and I went back to a normal life.

S.; things such as marina IUD's can be abortive, it may not always stop a pregnancy before the egg is fertilized, it may also prevent a pregnancy once the egg is fertilized and the fertilized egg may stll travel down the falopian tubes in a couple weeks to attach itself to the inside of the womb, however with the IUD in place it will not be able to implant and if it does, it wont be allowed to grow too big cause it now shares the womb with something else, that does harm to the fetus,, and of course aborts it, so i guess it depends on how you feel about abortion, is it life when fertilized? or when in the womb? what will your conscience allow? yes, this may be the easy route but if you do research on IUD's you will find this information, so make the choice that is best for you ! choose to be informed, and do what you choose according to your information, and your feelings, and the feeling of those in the family , have a good day, im not trying to be negative just informative, D. s

Hi S. -

I went with the Mirena IUD this May after my daughter was born in February. I have had no problems so far. There was some minor cramping during and after the procedure but nothing compared to childbirth! The first few times my husband and I had sex afterwards he said he could feel the 'strings' but that didn't last long and it wasn't painful to him. Hope this helps....

I would not recommend it because my sister in law's moved around and was stuck and she had to have surgery to get it out. Not my idea of safe birth control. I personally would not want some foreign object in me that was not supposed to be. I am back on the pill and it works the best for me but everybody is different.

My good friend started having horrible panic attacks, it was disrupting her life so bad, she was ready to get on meds or hospitalized. Thank God I had read something about the possibility of the MIrena having this effect on some people. She was reluctant to take it out because it had cost her $500 to put in. But she couldn't live like that, so she took the chance and took it out and hasn't had one since. If you are prone to any thing like depression or anxiety, I'd say, don't get it. If you have never been effected with anything like that, proceed with caution - be aware. Doctors won't tell you this either because they either don't know or they don't believe it. Anything that releases hormones has that potential. I'm going to put in the copper iud - no hormones.
One more thing. Many women never make the connection between what they are feeling and the Mirena. My friend never would have unless I brought it up. These women just think they are having problems so they might not bring it up with their doctors or with anyone.

You are either going to love it or hate it. Some people with have no periods some will bleed for months. Though the brochures claim no weight gain, I know woman who've gained weight and have severe mood swings. You can also still get pregnant. The iud doesn't always prevent ovulation just creates an uninhabitable enviroment to try to prevent implantation. Sometimes implantation can occur and more often than not will end with a miscarriage. However, there are woman out there who it works perfect for and love it. Just be prepared to possibly have it taken out in 6 months time if you hate it. Also make sure your insurance covers insertion and removal. Some don't and you can be stuck with a huge bill.

Hi S.,

I used Mirena previously and had an awful experience with/from it! After having my body my whole chemical make-up changed and I had a terrible reaction to the IUD. My face broke out horribly with acne like you had never seen! I went through chemical peels, microderm, injections-you name it I did it bea=cause I was determined to keep the IUD in! After months of counter-productive results, I had it removed! I continued with treatments and finally have somewhat healthy looking skin again. My doc said it was due to the horomones.

I have a girlfriend who also has it in now, and she absolutely loves it! Good luck to you with your decision and I hope it works for you!

I am on my second one, having the first one for 5 years and it needed to be changed. Love it, love it, love it! I had it becasue my periods kept me from life, and now i have none(periods that it). With 3 active children, I couldn't afford to be in bed 2 weeks every month and this was the solution. It took about 6 months for that effect to occur, but it was worth it.Keep in mind that the uterine lining thins out, which means you shed your lining, which means bleeding, but not a period or cramping, just bleeding like a period at first and then it tapers off. For me, that was 6 months until it totally stopped but for others it is much less. Now, I got mine when I was 44-45 and done having children, so if you change your mind it will take awhile for your uterine lining to return to normal (3-6 mths I think, ask your doctor). The only side effects I had was tender breasts at first, and the cost. Insurance didn't cover it,even though it saved me from having a hysterectomy (ablation wasn't as common as it is now). It hurts a little going in which takes a second. I had some cramping which lasted a day or two with the first one, with the second one I had none. I highly recommend it if you can afford it. My life is so much easier because of it.

You may want to look at the wikipedia information on Mirena. If you are nursing you child they have shown long term studies that these children who receive the hormones in the mothers milk have respiratory and eye difficulties.
Certain organizations do consider this to be abortive, yes the lining of you uterus has thinned ect. the fertilized embryo does not have anywhere to implant if their is a fertilization, which there is a 20% chance of that happening with mirena according to studies. There is also a doubled risk of breast cancer. Look for long term effects and cancer with mirena. This does mostly as it says it does, although what about 10, 15, or 20 years from now?what are you possible hazards.Children want healthy mothers to a ripe old age. Is it worth it?
