Hi mamas! I am so excited to be hosting 4th of July at our house this year. This is the first time in a long time that the ENTIRE family is going to be together! The cousins have LOs ranging from 3 years old to 4 months!

Do you have any holiday themed recipes? I think I'll make some sort of trifle with blueberries, strawberries, whipped cream and some sort of angel food cake. Any other ideas?? I'd love to hear either kid friendly or adult recipes/ideas. Thanks

Oh, BTW I wanted to let you know that I changed my profile name. I originally was Mandy B then I changed it to Ilovemyboys (cause I wanted a cute name), then I started having all sorts of computer issues so I figured it was easier to just create a new profile!

This is a favorite with my family:
Buy a box of strawberry cake mix and prepare as directed (bake in 2 round pans). When it has cooled, cover the bottom layer with strawberry jam, 1/2 a container of cool whip and blueberries. Put the 2nd layer on top and repeat with the strawberry jam, and remaining cool whip. Garnish the top with blueberries and strawberries. I have found that using an egg slicer to slice strawberries works well - then I fan the slices out on top of the cake.
My cousin dubbed the cake "heavenly, glorious cake" and when I make it, there are no leftovers!
Hope you have a great 4th of July party!!

We make a flag w/a 13x9 pan - slice up pound cake about 1/2" thick (i use the family size) and place on bottom of pan, smooth over with cool whip then do blueberries as the stars on the flag & the strawberries as stripes - it comes out really neat & the children love to help with this. We did it in my daughter's pre-school - what a mess............but what fun!!!!!!!!!!

One of my favorite drinks we tried on our honeymoon was a Miami vice. Layer strawberry daquiri then piña colada and top with blue curaçao (sp?). You could make a non alcoholic version for the kids with slushies. I would recommend getting the buckets of daquiiri mix and piña colada so you don't have to spend half of the day manning the blender. Have fun!

Flag cake! Any cake with white icing then do an upper left hand rectangle of rows of blueberries and rows of sliced fresh strawberries for the stripes.

Also, you could make a cookie pizza....and refrigerated cookie dough--press into pizza pan round circle, cook, apply thin layer of peanut butter then add red/white and blue candies (M&M's, etc) then drizzle white icing in lines going from center to edge to look like a firework! A version of this can be found on the Pillsbury website. A lot of other "patriotic" dishes as well:

My ideas are going to be junk foody- sorry about that. But blue is tough one to do healthy :)

You sort of mentioned it, but I was going to suggest a fruit pizza. I don't know the exact recipe but I'm sure allrecipes.com would have it. You use a log of sugar cookie dough and press it into a pizza pan (a rectangle one would be cute- sorta like a flag!) and bake it. Cool it, then you use a half and half mix of marshmallow fluff and cream cheese blended. Then layer on the fruit. I'd use strawberries and blueberries and make a flag. It is so easy and tastes yummy too. You can bake the cookie the day ahead to save time.

Blue punch using kool aid would be an easy way to get some blue in the menu, since blue food is hard to come by. Or you could just use some blue food coloring in a regular drink like lemonade. And red sangria for the adults would be a cheap way to have alcohol if you want it. With blueberries and strawberries for the fruit of course.

Star cookies with all three colors of frosting.

I would check allrecipes and see if they are featuring any patriotic recipes, they do often holiday themes on the home page.

I like to make a pan of brownies and use blueberries and strawberries to make it look like a flag. I first put a layer of whipped topping over the brownies, then put the blueberries up in top left corner for the "stars" and slice some strawberries and make "stripes" out of those. Comes out great every time and is yummy too! Enjoy your party.

Um....
1) make a plate of veggies....ie: mozzarella cheese, with tomatoes, and yes, blueberries. Drizzle it with a good extra virgin olive oil/salt/pepper to taste. Or with a Papaya Seed dressing. This is also good on these.
Very good. And you can arrange the tomatoes/blueberries/cheese in 'stripes' or something or in a circular pattern.
Often, fruits are great in salads with dressing.

2) Also, make yogurt cups for the kids/adults.... like a trifle but put it in little glass cups or bowls. Just layer blueberries/strawberries or any other red fruit/vanilla yogurt. My kids like that. And you can top it with loose granola.

3) Also: do WHITE chocolate dipped strawberries... but with food coloring, color the white chocolate with red and blue food coloring, then dip the strawberries in it. Set it on wax paper until the chocolate is hardened. And of course, do a set of strawberries just dipped in the white chocolate sans food coloring.

good luck,
Susan
