Reel Tapes to Video

Recently we received some old home movies. We have three 5 inch reel tapes that need to be transferred to video. They are probably very delicate and I kind of hate to give them to Walmart to get that done. Anyone have a tried and true place to get this done?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I just look at the website for the Longview place. It looks like better pricing, quicker turn around and it's in Texas. I think that's the winner, Evil Twin! Thanks everybody!

If you don't mind mailing them, I am using a place here in Pittsburgh to do exactly this - Rewind Memories, you can google them.

What they do that is different is that in addition to transferring, they do dynamic color correction to make every video look as good as it can. I just gave them a box of reels last week, which includes my parents' wedding, I can't wait to get the DVD!

We have family who have used Costco without problems. I am not quite sure why you are uncomfortable with Walmart. If it is because they are not a photo place, I would suggest just going to a photography place in your home town. Otherwise, I would think any big box store would have the same service. I also know that Sam's Club does this. Good luck!

We had ours transferred at Walgreens. They did a good job on ours. I guess it may depend on how old your reels are. Ours were from the last 60's to early 70's.

Costco transferred the reels we found and they were great because because they sent me a link to share with my family online. When I received the DVD, they made two for the price of one and I got a credit since there was less footage than they originally thought. Most places send the job to an outside job because of the specialized equipment needed. Enjoy viewing your family movies :) Ours ended up being of my parent's 25th wedding anniversary and they are now at 57th anniversary!

I found several places that do it locally. I didn't want to take my old tapes to Costco or Walmart because they send them out to be processed and that just seemed like an additional risk of them being lost or damaged. Just google "video transfer DVD film" or something similar and local businesses should pop up.
I had 8mm camcorder tapes that were transferred onto DVDs. It cost about $20 per tape (two hours worth of film.)

Search online under "video services" or "video transfer services" or "video editing services" etc. for your area. If you are very lucky there might be a specialist company that does video editing services.

We used to use a great local business here in our area that did this sort of thing with care and speed but they closed down -- thanks to the Wal-Marts and Costcos butting in on small businesses. I would be much more comfortable taking things like this to a small, local business where the staff does this work ALL the time than to a mega-store where I don't know if the person behind the counter actually knows anything about the work or is just someone filling in a form.....If you use a mega-box store, I'd ask if the store does this work right there, in-house, or if they send it away somewhere. If it's the latter, you would do better to just find a reputable place online and send it away yourself.

As you can tell, I don't really trust it when a huge business tells me it can be all things to all people and do everything well!

No problem with mine from Walmart or Walgreens. They just take long.
