Hello, (just edited to make it more clear)

We are cleaning and decluttering..and I would love to get rid of it all! I don't like excess....
We have a huge box of VHS of various tapes
What would you do..take LOTS of time to transfer them? or Toss them out?

I should add: They were before our son was born..other peoples events/some BBQ's, others weddings..etc...

So What Happened?

Such Great advice from All of you!
Well, here is what we decided...to hook up the old VHS :) And everynight watch what we can to see what we can save.
I have heard it is expensive to transfer, so we will pick the lil' gems we can't live without and transfer those.
Thx again for helping on me on my decluttering journey! I am getting closer..I can see a light at the end of the tunnel,
through my garage!

Anything sentimental like footage of the kids , weddings , birthday parties I would start with editing , keep snippets of the events and then transfer it to DVD. Footage like a family BBQ for example where uncle bob told a joke toss it out!

Good luck

Costco I think does transfers to DVD's.

Also though, you might want to make sure that the VHS tapes are still good... they don't last forever and do degrade. So... you have to determine that first, if your tapes are even still good and playable. Then, because it is not a media that lasts forever, you need to decide if you want to spend the money to transfer them to DVD format. Because it does cost bucks.

good luck,
Susan

I am a saver of stuff like this that can't be replaced, If i can replace it i don't care about tossing it, but i don't get why you would bother taking so much video footage in the frst place if it isn't something you or the person that took it (hubby) cares about. Sit down and watch it and think about if your son would want to know these people some day, and then price around to see about having it transfered. and the BBq's and other candids I woudl be more likely to keep than a wedding.

If they are of personal events, yes, I would transfer them to disk. Video of loved ones and even not so loved ones is GOLD. I would even consider creating a video scrapbook to tell about the video and the people in it and what it meant to me.

I really wish I even had photos of my grand parents (now gone). Video is almost like the real thing in front of me talking and walking!

If you want to keep them, there are services that can transfer them to DVD for you. Since you said LOTS of time, it sounds like they aren't sentimental though

If they are from "other people's" events, maybe you could give the tapes to the corresponding other people! I bet they'd love to have them, and then they can transfer the tapes themselves if they want to keep the footage.

For myself, I wouldn't just toss them without transferring them first. People grow up, grow old (if they're lucky), and die. The only video we have of my dad (not so lucky) is a brief few soundless seconds from one of my grandpa's old films my cousin transferred. You never know.

And some people still do use VCRs to tape TV shows (my friend and I do!), so instead of just sending the tapes to a landfill, maybe Craigslist them or something (depending on how many you have).

Good for you on the decluttering! Something my house desperately needs but it's just such an overwhelming job... :)

DO you have the original Little Mermaid with the original cover? If you do, SAVE IT! I have the original and one of the spires of Triton's castle is a, uh . . . man's weiner!!! YES!!! UNMISTAKABLE!!!

I guess there was a disgruntled animator working for Disney and he drew it in. When disney realized what happened, they quickly recalled the movie and covers (smart people kept them!)

In the film, the priest also gets an erection while marrying the sea witch and the prince. You have to scan the scene very slowly and sure enough, some-thing pops up!!!!!

So if you have the Little Mermaid original VHS KEEP IT!!!

Transfer them of personal events and then toss away the VHS. If they are movies and things- i would look cost to replace with DVD or blue ray then decide what to do. I have tons of disney vhs for my kids- can't part with them because alot are locks in the disney vault and I can't get them on dvd.
I toss everything- I am not at all sentimental about things like that I hate the clutter. Now pictures is a totally other story... I have pictures friends gave me in school that is stored right along with my kids pictures- but pretty much anything else... if I don't use it -it is gone!
