Does anyone still have any VHS Disney movies? I have so many of them and I was wondering what to do with them. We just had a grandchild with another on the way in March. Can I get them transferred to DVD's? Any suggesstions?

What can I do next?

I would think it would be cost prohibitive to transfer them to DVD and the quality would probably be lacking. If you don't want to spend a lot, I would pick up a plain old VHS player at a thrift store for around $15 and call it a day.

I have a bunch that I bought for a $1 each. That's about all they are worth.

I never had any Disney movies before and this was a great way to collect and have some for my kids.

Guess what. VHS tapes are the easiest to use and are harder to break or damage. Great for kids to use (if you are willing).

VCRs are super cheap these days. Pick up one or two (for storage in case they become obsolete). Kids don't care about the quality of the picture like we do. :) Keep your investment and don't change them out. It is not worth it. You can copy them over to a DVD for storage sake, but the quality is still the same.

We still have a bunch and we still have a VCR that we've held onto - and there really isn't anything wrong with them! Sometimes we will pop one in for DD to watch if it's one we don't have on DVD, and she's happy either way! Honestly, when the kids get old enough to watch them, they probably won't care that it's a tape instead of a DVD - they can still enjoy it!

I purchased an inexpensive VHS/DVD combo that will allow you to record a VHS to a DVD.

And, no, it's not copyright infringement when you copy them to DVD for your personal use.

If I was you I would do what we did. get one of those vhs / dvd players. and just keep the tapes. I got rid of all of mine and then along came grandkids. I was trying to buy one at a time but at $20 a crack for the dvds I decided that was stupid lol. I went to a second hand store and bought all the good disney ones for 99 cents each and then got a player / dvd thing and the grandkids watch the movies all the time.

Like you I have a ton of Disney VHS movies. Our last player just went kaput. Honestly though? I think investing in new dvd's is worth it since the quality is soooo much better.
As a footnote, I am also perplexed by Gamma G's lesson on copyrights, not sure why she felt the need to explain all that? Did I miss something in your question?

I have all my Disney movies on VHS. I have all of them - Darby O'Gill and the little people, Apple Dumpling gang, Little mermaid, etc. so you know I've got a lot!!! :)

With technology the way it is today - I'm sure there is a way to transfer/copy them to disc. I don't know the legality of it. If you are going to sell them - it shouldn't be construed as pirating...

I have mine on DVD as well. I know - waste of money - but that's when we used credit cards!! LOL!

We still have a lot of VHS tapes... I can't see buying all the movies again unless I find them in the $5 bin. We had a VHS/DVD player, but need to get another one. I currently have a Blue-ray player we got for Christmas last year, but only have 1 Blue-ray - lol we use it to play our DVD's cause if I won't update my VHS, I'm not going to update my DVD's.

The tenants of the house next to us just moved out and left a ton of VHS tapes - so the landlords which were our neighbors for years gave them to us... so we just added about 6 milk crates of movies to our collection. We really need a new VHS player - lol.

I'd say keep them & get a player for them - it's a lot cheaper the replacing them.

We held on to them until the machine finally bit the dust. Then I sold them on ebay, the entire lot..

Our Daughter is now 21 and still collects them on DVD.. Makes great gifts.

We have a DVD/VCR combo machine so we can still watch them. We have purchased a lot on DVD. I love DVD's because I don't have to fast forward through stuff, I can just jump to the menu.

BTW-Gamma G, it is kind of weird that half your post was about the whole copyright issue. The half AFTER you said that you made copies of all your VHS tapes. Isn't that against the copyright?

I have all mine from 22 years ago forward. They still work great and as long as you can purchase a cheap VHS player, they are not going anywhere!

I'm not techie so I can't tell you exactly how BUT yes, they can be transferred. If you still have too many, There are LOTS of daycares that would love to have your overage because most still show VHS tapes to their kids on rainy days/holidays etc.
