Anyone have a toddler or child diagnosed with restless leg syndrome? Just talked with our ped and she's going to run some tests on our son tomorrow to see if he may have it. If you do, please share your experiences. I'm hoping the testing and treatment will help with his sleeping issues, which is why we're headed down this path. Thanks in advance!

So What Happened?

Galway girl - I was surprised too, but apparently, it's fairly common for toddlers and supplementation with iron sometimes help. It often presents in this age as major sleep issues, based on my conversation with the ped on the phone. Thanks!

If they're talking restless leg syndrome try giving him a banana every day. The potassium in them will help, I have it and muscle spasms and the doctor told me to do this. I can't as I'm allergic to them so get it in other foods. It helps!

Huh. I am surprised they can diagnose and treat RLS in a child that young. I have Restless Leg Syndrome and so does my mom. So far we have yet to find anything great to help it. My mom takes a medication that knocks her out early at night but from what I understand it is really hard to get off the medication and it has a side effect of causing impulsive behavior. I have refused to do medication after she tried several and they all caused bad side effects. I have heard that eating bananas at night helps (potassium?) I find that stretching and massaging by legs before bed helps, also going to bed at a reasonable hour (no late movies) and going easy on sugar and caffiene.

I used to have it. Cutting out wheat made it go away. If I eat wheat, it comes back...

I don't think they call it restless leg in the wee ones. I know my son complains that his legs hurt at night and can wake him up crying it "hurts" so much. My mom called them growing pains when I had them growing up.

One word: Potassium. Give your child a half a banana hour before bedtime. It helps and when in doubt, a heating pad can work too. If that doesn't work, half a dose of Tylenol. It depends on pain level.

Good luck to you. Sending good thoughts your way.
