Riots?

With these riots in London, do you ever sit and think "When will this be us and what will start it?"

I personally think its only a matter of time, and feel blessed we have the second amendment and can defend ourselves.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am not saying I would shoot someone just because! I am more of a loner and would probably go in my basement on the computer unless someone attacked my home

I think you are comparing apples to oranges.

And the US has already had it's share of rioting, looting, etc. all throughout history, where ya been? LOL
Haymarket, Watts, Stonewall, Rodney King, New Orleans.....anyone?

Remember when the people of flooded New Orleans were dying from lack of drinking water (I thin Dubya was flying overhead)?

Yep...definitely time to load up the ammo, handguns, rifles and semi-automatics and head for the hills. Some where secluded, like where the the Unibomber lived. Because there are race riots happening 3200 miles away.
:)
Not.

As long as most people can afford beer, football and cable tv - they'll stay planted in front of a tv being entertained rather than raise a ruckus.

Someone posted that these riots were somehow related to last year's protests over tuition. These riots are nothing to do with the college tuition protests last year. Completely unrelated. The people doing this rioting are there to loot and cause mayhem and see things burn and destroy police cars, because right now they can. Last year some kids went too far and smashed some windows -- not to yank out televisions and steal stuff; they smashed windows at institutions associated with student loans etc. And sensible kids apologized for their fellow students' idiocy as soon as it happened.

These kids rioting now aren't part of that. And they aren't even "protesting" because of the police shooting that took place last week.

These rioters aren't calling for change, or giving interviews about what wrongs they've suffered at police hands, or organizing street marches to go stand in front of Parliament and demand different policing laws. They're stealing televisions and breaking into betting shops hoping for cash.

There certainly are racial tensions between youths and police in Britain. No question of that. And that certainly may have started out fueling this -- somewhat. But these kids (and in videos on TV I've seen both black and white ones participating) now are looting and burning for kicks. This morning's news showed photos kids had posted online, of themselves grinning with their looted goods.

This isn't truly about race, college tuition hikes, the bank failures (seriously? someone thinks these kids even know about that?), or even a controversial police shooting. It's kids playing thug because right now they know they have the police outnumbered and the local citizens scared. IIt's about kids who have zero impulse control and police who never should have gotten so overwhelmed.

The riots in London are related to a shooting death. I don't know the details, but this happens in the US already. And usually after sporting events for some stupid reason. Rioters are thugs, not protesters.

Hi T.!

NPR had some good reports on, and from, London today. Check out their website - most should be there.

for example - http://www.npr.org/2011/08/09/139276065/why-london-explod...

Will it happen here? It already has. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_riots

What will I do?
Depends on the protest. I have been known to support civil disobedience. I do not support mayhem, destruction and looting. In that case, I would do what many Londoners are doing - hunker down in the evenings, watch the news, and hope it doesn't come to my neighborhood, and hopefully, be a voice of reason to any that I knew who were participating in the mayhem. But, if it did hit my neighborhood, I would protect my family - be that securing my home or finding a safer place to go.

While I uphold the 2nd amendment - I don't think the right to bear arms gives us the right to negligently use those arms against others...especially when tempers and emotions are already at a boiling point. That is what our trained law enforcement and military are for.

What started in London as a peaceful protest over the killing of a young father, has been escalated by predominately young people into rampant, out of control riots for no reason. Several quotes that came out today, from rioters, showed that they are doing it just because they can. "It is fun" "I can take what I want". There is, now, no political message, or social reason for these riots. It is people out of control - a mindless mob intent on terrorizing a city for their own pleasure.

I know what you mean, I think about this a lot too. I don't own a gun though, so I'm screwed if/when it all goes down.

I know they are mad at the banks and the financial system has imploded on itself.

It sort of happened here when the gov't refused to support abandoned loans, only to bail the banks out with a few katrillion dollars.

If rioting ever happened in my area, I would secure my home and get the heck out of dodge.
