Routine Adjustment

My baby is 9 weeks old and we have been doing the three hour Baby Whisperer E.A.S.Y. routine for the past three days. We didn't have a routine before. The first day worked like a charm but now I can't get her to sleep more than 15 minutes in her bassinet or holding her for nap time. I am watching her cues and swaddling her when she starts to look spacey and before she gets cranky. I do the pat/shush just how the book says to do it and I've tried the troubleshooting suggestions. She sleeps great at night only waking once and sometimes twice. Anyway, back to naptime, she won't go back to sleep and then she's cranky 10 minutes later. My questions are...How long will this "adjustment" period be, for the Moms that have done the EASY routine, or just introduced any new routine. Will she start sleeping longer as the days go by? Am I missing something? I am also unsure if I should stick to the 3 hr Eat Activity then Sleep routine when she only sleeps 15 minutes. I try to get her to sleep longer but she just gets more and more upset. I'm thinking I should stick to the E, A, S no matter how long she naps and she'll eventually adjust and sleep longer, has that worked for any of you? I am not expecting overnight success, I just want to make sure I'm doing the best I can for my baby. This is my second child but I worked with my first child. Our routine was get up, eat and go to the babysitter's for most of the day, plus it was five years ago and I have forgotten everything.

My daughter is 8 mos (I also have a 4.5 yo) and has just started staying awake 3 hours at a time...maybe your little one is overtired. I know it sounds silly, but being too tired can be just as bad for sleep. Honestly, I think the EASY is a good starting point and has good ideas, but your baby will show you her schedule if you give her a chance. Since you're at home with her you could plan a couple of days where you don't have activities planned outside your home and watch her for cues on when she wants to eat or sleep. I am a scheduled person so it was really hard for me to let go of the concept of scheduling my baby, but once I did all of us were much happier. Besides, at 9 weeks she's starting to "wake up", I bet once you give her a chance to tell you what she needs everything will work out well! Good luck!

Is it possible she was not sleepy during her nap time in the first place? Could be she is going into a new sleep pattern. Maybe give her more awake time and find out when she more naturally beginning to start her sleeping, not just react so quickly to her "signs" of tiredness..

At this age her sleep patterns will change faster than sometimes we expect.. Hang in there.

Nora,

I haven't done the EAS system but I too have a 9 week old my other is 7. My first was a great sleeper but my new one is not so I've tried a few things and works varies from day to day. The car of course is always great but I used to have to put Lavender lotion on his clothes to help him stay calm. At home usually the swing is where he wants to sleep. The bassinet he usually only sleeps a short amount of time unless I have him tightly swaddled and then I may get 30 minutes of a nap time. Every now and then when he is doing tummy time on him playmate he'll fall asleep and that I usually get an hour out of. You have to see what works for your baby. At night mine usually sleeps until 4 or 5 which is really nice since I can get those few extra hours now but during the day it's difficult. When I'm grocery shopping I have started putting him in the sling and he sleeps pretty well in there. Good Luck and enjoy them

My baby only took little cat naps too. It drove me crazy! I started darkening the room where my baby sleeps for naps and after a small adjustment she is sleeping much better! She has even taken naps that lasted longer then 2 hours.

My thought is she is not getting enough calories and she's hungry. If you're breastfeeding, try single-sided feeds or try some cereal in her bottle.

Mine was kind of the same way until I put cereal in her bottle. Overnight she went from a cranky baby to a perfect baby. My son was the same as well.

Whenever I have changed something or tried a new method in my daughter's sleep routine I promise in the beginning to give it two weeks before I give up on it. That way I give it time to really work. I feel like everytime I have changed something there has been a pattern of easy the first night, then resistance, and then acceptance. You will probably know in two weeks if she will accept this new method. Good luck!
