My 2 year old daugter is afraid of the ice cream truck music, sirens and even church bells. We live about a mile from a church, the hospital and the ice cream truck goes by everyday in the summer. I have even brought her out there and bought ice cream, and it didn't work. She covers her ears everytime we leave the house and if we are outside playing, she runs in crying as soon as she hears something. She is very vocal so I asked her why she is scared and she can't tell me. I am home with her everyday, so I know nothing tramatizing happened to make her scared of these things. Has anyone heard of this before? I don't know what to do, it's getting to the point that if I need to run to the store she starts crying and doesn't want to go. Any suggestions?
Well her ears are fine, she just has a fear of noises she doesn't hear everyday. Only loud noises. We are slowly introducing her to these noises inside the house and trying to convince her that the noises from sirens help people, the noises from the Ice Cream truck means a treat and so on. She is slowing getting better. Thank you all for your suggestions. That's why I love this site.
Hearing can go both ways. You can be deaf and you can be sensitive to high pitched noise. I believe you should take your daughter to an ENT doctor. I have hearing loss and sensitivity to some loud noises.
I agree with the other posts. My daughter (now 9) had hearing loss until she was 7 months old. After surgery and tubes, she became VERY sensitive to any loud noises; if a balloon popped at a birthday party she was done! Sirens, bells, fireworks, carnivals, you name it! She has since outgrown this (and no longer has tubes) but many ear conditions could cause this. We just remained sensitive to the fact that these things actually hurt her ears and tried to shield her as much as possible from it - or at least forewarn her whenever possible. Best of luck!
i would take her in to get her hearing checked she may have sentitive ears and they may b able to do something about it. i would also try ear plugs hen you have to take her some where. just to make her comfy when she goes outside. i would honestly think about getting her teasted for senstivity in her iner ear. i hope i helped.
Frustrating huh? Has your daughter had tubes in her ears? Our nephew (now 13) had tubes in is ears when a infant. They helped his hearing alright! Now his ears are so sensitive to noises especially screeching, high pitch, like the sounds you have described (he knows better than to make his sister angry at him :) He walked around with his fingers in his ears whenever they'd go somewhere. They couldn't take him to the fireworks displays because of the screamers. He's OK with the "boom" style noises but not the high pitched. He's still sensitive but more tolerant now.

Hi, K.! It might be that it hurts her ears and not that she's scared of the noises. When I was little, heck even still, my ears are extremely sensitive to loud noises. When I was at parades when I was younger, I would cry and cover my ears when the firetrucks went by.
