Scheduling Medical Appointments and Holidays

I also do that. But it tends to work better for me if I schedule on work holidays. Kids can make up their work at school, generally, with no problem. Me however, can't make up work.

You are not alone! My daughter had perfect attendance last year and has now decided she wants it every year until she graduates high school. BTW, she is in 3rd grade, so we shall see what she really wants in high school! For now, though, she is not happy if there is even a discussion about her missing school.

I feel that Children need time-off just as much as Adults do. I make it a point to not schedule appointments during school breaks, holidays, and vacations. This allows my household to make the most of our quality time together during those periods of no school :)

It works best in our family to do an after school appointment which is typically easy for us to get scheduled in our dentist and drs. offices. This way the kids (and me!) really get to enjoy their day off from school and they don't miss any school time either. They need those breaks as much as we do sometimes and not having to be somewhere at a certain time is wonderful! Since we are already out anyway after carpool time, we'll always grab those appts. so they are out of the way by dinner time. What ever works best in each family is what we moms have to do! For us though, those school holidays are for just spending time together with nothing we don't want to do planned.

Nope we are not mean, just trying to minimize the absences. I have made appointments before school or after school. My daughter's birthday has fallen on presidents day twice and made her well child checkup on that day since she was out of school.

Hi, I am raising 4 of 6 grand kids. We travel 125 miles to go to the most awesome Pediatric Dentist and we schedule the appointments for Spring Break and Fall Break. It is an awful lot of fun to go to OKC for several days and see lots of fun things and throw in a visit to see Dr. Lee. The kids always want to know how much longer til we go see him. When we schedule our visits to the Pediatrician we usually know when the next appointment needs to be, such as shots when he/she turns 2, I take time and schedule the appointment right then when I have lots of choices and can choose the day and time I need.

There are always times when appointments need to be made that are acute issues, such as UTI. I go to the school and pick up whomever and get them back as soon as possible. Their health is my responsibility and if they have to miss school then too bad, I have to give them the best chance to be healthy. Especially in this horrid time where children and others are dying from this aweful flu.

As a mom and a teacher you are not being a mean mom. If your child misses school every time they have some kind of doctor's appointment then they would really be missing a lot of school. It is harder on a student to have to make up work than be at school. I know your child probably wants to go during school, what child wouldn't. Just explain to him/her the reason why you don't want him/her missing school for every appointment and maybe they will understand someday.

Why are you even concerned about this? You are the MOM and whenever you schedule appointments for your children is the right time. Of course, it is the right thing to minimize abcense from school when possible and I did it when my daughter was in school!

If that makes you mean, then I'm down right evil!!! LOL!!

My son is only 2 months old & I'm already looking forward to the little things I can do as a mom to torture him! And scheduling appointments around school is an excellent way. ~please find the sarcasim in all that~

I do it too. I also work for the school system and hate missing days. I often have to schedule a month or so in advance. Some office are difficult as they only do certain procedures at certain times of the day. I will even change doctors if it is too much of a problem. On the upside it shows your children how much you value their education and hopefully they will value it too..... someday.

I have found that so many people try to sched dental work, haircuts, etc. . on school holidays that it is hard to get an appt on those days. Sometimes it is easier to take the 7:30 AM appt or the 4:00 PM appt and get in before or after school.

THank goodness! I thought I was the only odd mom out there who only scheduled after school, before school or on days school was out. I grew up with the notion that school was too important to miss for a routine check-up, you'd better be dying to miss.

Yes, I always try to do that. And as a teacher, I really appreciate when other moms do it too. I hate when students miss class because of checkups and dental appts, etc. I understand if the child was sick and missed the whole day of school, but so many times it is just for checkups or dental work. These things need to be taken care of after school or on holidays. I teach math, and that is not a subject you can easily make up.
