K.K.
I like the One Touch battery operated can opener that I got last Christmas. It runs by itself and opens all cans. I've seen it at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens. Good luck.
Oh this will probably sound so silly. I cannot open cans with any can openers these days. They are made so safe I can't open them up. The circluar steel part is bent inward and I can't turn it. I have purchased about five different ones. Some cheap, some not. I always end up having my husband open them. I bought an electric can opener and same thing. They are too safe. All I want is a good old fashioned can opener or one that will be turnable. Does anyone know of a place to buy one, or a good kitchen store, or a good brand that you don't have trouble with. I live in the burbs near WoodDale, Elmhurst, Itasca, etc. Woodfield and Stratford and Oakbrook are reachable, although can make it into the city. This is making me crazy.
Thank you all for your great responses. I found a Rival can opener that seems to do the trick.

Get a "one touch" can opener. You can get them anywhere;
Walgreens, Kohls, Kmart, Target.
I LOVE mine. You can look them up on the web.
if you are looking for a manual can opener - try the Swingaway brand - haven't purchased one in a few years so I don't know where you would find one. Try the internet.
if you are looking for an electric, i don't use them so I can't recommend them
Pampered Chef has a great one and it is safe too. Good luck:)

I snickered while reading this because I've gone thru the same thing. $ store openers break or the blades are not close enough to grip a can. Some expensive ones are so stiff I couldn't grip it and turn. Electric openers still get dull blades and need a storage spot. I finally settled on an $8.00 one from Walmart. I figure if it lasts a year or more, I'll be happy. There are more important things to worry about.
Actually believe it or not, we have the "as seen on tv" hands free can opener and it works pretty well. You put it on the can, press the button and let it do it's job and it leaves a smooth egde on the can. Worth a try. We like ours.
I don't know about "too safe," but I had the problem where the cans never seemed to open completely or the can opener would not get started. I don't like electric can openers. I finally got a plain kitchenaid opener that looks more or less like this one: http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KG130ER-Can-Opener-Red/d...
I have a great can opener. I sell Pampered Chef and it is a Pampered Chef can opener. I live in the Elk Grove Village area. Please email personally and I can help you out.

I love all of the products by GOOD GRIPS. You can find the brand at Bed Bath & Beyond, sometimes Target and Container Store. I can't remember the price but I'd say generally medium price but excellent quality and easy to use!
I agree with the Walgreen's one touch can opener. I loved mine until I stupidly tried to open a can when the batteries were low and now it is broken. (I can't get lid off to change batteries.)FYI
Two can openers that I like are the swing away brand and the pampered chef brand. Pampered chef leaves removes the lid from the can without leaving a sharp edge. You can probably purchase a swing-a-way on amazon, or online somewhere. Pampered Chef you would need to order from a pampered chef rep.
