Seeking a Good Lawyer

I have a dear friend who is a single mom(How you all do it I DO NOT know!). Her sons father is not in the picture to support them emotionally, but is legally bound to be helping financially. He has not paid her one cent in the last year and owes her $30,000+ for the 7 years her son has been alive. She went thru all the right legal channels, so she thought. Whenever she tries to contact the powers that be, they tell her that the case # that she gives does not exist. She does not want to go back to the lawyer she had, before...for obvious reasons. Does anybody know a good lawyer that so not ourageously expensive that has experience in these matters.
Her sons father is willing to do what he needs to, but won't initate things on his own. (I felt the need to share that to give him some credit, but he does not desreve more than that!)
She lives in the northern suburbs, but I an sure if there is a good reason she would be willing to travel elsewhere.
Thanks

if she needs help getting money from him, she can contact the state disbursment unit and they will help her and they wont charge her at all. www.ilchildsupport.com. there is a number on there where she can reach someone and they can figure out together about the case number mixup. i hope this helps...good luck. my ex husband owes me also $30,000+ for 8 years not paying, now i get regular checks!!!

If you have an order of Support for your children you can get free assistance from the state in collecting child support. There is some general information and numbers on this web site. http://www.chicagobar.org/public/diallaw/18.asp
Once the state picks up your case thay can help in collection by withholding both state and federal income tax refunds as well as suspending their drivers license if necessary. There's a bunch of paper work to fill out but once your in they can really help and all at not cost to you.

Hi J.,

I'm a single mom who has also gone through all of the legal channels (and still have over $5K left to pay in legals fees, ick).

You said that your friend's son's father is legally bound to financially support his child - does she have a court order? She should have SOMETHING that was filed with the circuit court clerk. It will he stamped with the time and date. I'm not sure if you meant her former lawyer or the courts when you mentioned "powers that be" - but if she had something filed with the court it will make the task of collecting support easier. If she doesn't have any kind of court-stamped documentation (but it exists) she will need to go to the clerk of the court and get a copy - which there will be a fee for.

If she doesn't have a court order signed by a Judge.... then her son's father doesn't owe her a cent (yet)... it's all about the paper trail (I've learned that the gard way myself!)
