Seeking a Good Medical Advise Book

My son has turned one year old and now he is walking full time. With that, he has been scraping his knees and arms, bumping his head, and so on. Thank God nothing has been serious, but I would like to have a book that has all the medical advises such as, what I need to do when he has a big bruse on his head (I know I need to put ice on it, this is just an example). What I need to do if he burns himself, what I need to do if he gets stung by a bee, and so on. I know I can check it on line also, but I would like to have a book that I can look at real quick. Does anyone know any book like that? Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

What To Expect the Toddler Years has a good first aid and medical advice section. If you want a more holistic bent, Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine is great. Those are the only two we have needed up to this point.

I received a book when I was pregnant called something like three am questions. But I no longer need it. I will send it to you if you like. Let me know and I will get it out right away. It was very helpful. I can't have any more kids so I don't need it anymore. But I recently burned myself. A friend told me put mustard on it and let it dry then wash off. It worked. No more pain, no blister no nothing. I was amazed. Anyway, let me know. My name is C. I live in Labadie and would be glad to help. My email is ____@____.com.

I like a book called "Your Toddler Head to Toe." It has come in very handy for me and my 2 year old son.

Hi K.-
I got a good one for you that I bought through Huggies: The Complete and Authoritative Guide Caring for Your Baby and Young Child Birth to Age 5. It has been a lifesaver! It is actually a child care book created by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is very comprehensive and has an index in the back to help find things easily. The Publisher is Bantam Books and the ISBN number is 0-553-37962-3. The one I have is copywrited 1998, but there may be newer versions.

Hi, You could always take a First Aid class thru your local American Red Cross. They will also give you little booklets that cover different accidents both minor and major. They also sell great First Aid kits that contain ointments for bee stings, burns, and so on.

K.,
I would suggest just going to your local book store. I am sure they have a plethera of these types of books.
Fyi..when my children now 15 & 13 were growing up, I made sure I had an aloe vera plant in the house. Aloe is excellant for burns. The plant is great because all you have to do is snip off a piece and smear the "juice" on the burn and cover with a band aid. Highly suggested!
Good Luck finding what you are looking for.

Hi K.,
Look for a book by Dr. Marianne Niefert - it's "Dr. Mom's..." can't remember the rest of the name. I received one from the boutique I registered at for baby shower as a thank you for registering. It's a nice book. Also, recently I had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Mom speak at a lecture. She's awesome - so I'd reccommend her stuff. Also, don't forget, chances are the nurses at your doc's office will answer a lot of quesitons for you if you aren't sure what to do, call them. Sometimes we moms just need a little reassurance. Good luck, the start of the bruises and skinned knees is not fun! :-)

I'm also a SAHM of a one year old boy and my advice to you is to find a pediatrician you like well enough to call whenever you have a question like that. I feel very comfortable asking my ped. ANY type of question and I trust his advise over any other. Plus, he always has a nurse on call at anytime for my questions, no matter how little or big they seem. You should never feel silly asking your Dr. a question and he or she shoudl never make you feel that way.

I like the "How to Take Care of Yourself" and "How to Take Care of Your Child" books by Fries and Vickery. They have short informational pages on almost every subject and flow charts to help you know what to do. Very simple and easy to follow. If you answer all the yes/no questions on the flow charts and it says to "apply home treatment", it even tells you what to do at home. Worth a look.

It must be a boy thing. My 19 month old son is the same way. He is constantly getting hurt. He is not afraid to do anything. I don't have a book, but my husband is a paramedic. Chances are he isn't going to let you do anything other than give it a kiss if he gets hurt. My son hates to be messed with. He had a bump on his head but wouldn't let us put ice on it. He won't let us look at his scrapes. He will come to me and hold up his "ouchy" for a kiss and that is about it. He then goes on playing and getting hurt. He even burned his hand on an iron. I tried to run it under cold water but he wanted down. I kissed it and suddenly everything was better. Of course if he would get seriously hurt we would have to be stronger with him. So I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a book because you may not get to use it much. Lots of kisses make everything better!
