Hello,
I am looking for ideas for a career transition; I did accounts payable for more than ten years, I recently was laid off due to the bad market and economy. I was wondering if anybody can give an idea how to start my own side business in photography, I have been taking pictures to friends and family and when somebody needs pictures for free. Times are hard and I would like to make a change soon. Thank you in advance for all your great ideas

Start a blog! Do friends/family for free or very cheap so you have pictures to showcase. Have business cards made and give them to friends to hand out, place them in kid friendly places like My Gym, local swim schools, etc.. many of these places have a parents board where you can place flyers/business cards. Best wishes!

My friends husband picked 2 days and then sent out invites to friends via email that if they came and let him take pics for a portfolio website he would put together a CD of pics and if they ordered from him he would give half of the first order.

It worked pretty well I think he does weddings, kids parties and other occasions.

Look at other sites and see what they charge and put a price sheet together. Before you buy a webpage name, get on Twitter and FB and get Fan Pages. Definitely start a blog to showcase your work since those are free to set up, until you get fancy!

Good Luck

Hi E., put a portfolio together of your work, have some business cards made. You can do children birthday party's. I knew one girl she went around home daycare's and did photos, my daycare parents really liked her work, and the concept was outstanding because children have school portraits starting with kindergarten, so why not start as early as daycare? Good Luck. J. L.

Hi E., I know you posted this awhile ago, but I was just wondering if you found a suitable answer to your question? How are things going for you? I have a friend who just started a photography business and I could ask her how she got it going. I have a home business myself, and I am looking for people who really want to make a change. If you are still needing that change, feel free to take a look at my website and if what you see interests you, please request information, and I'll contact you personally. My website is www.changealife2day.com.

Blessings!

Start your advertising campaign both online and offline, get a website and post your work, have your friends write reviews for your website, offer freebies to get your clientele.. Get business cards and leave them everywhere, ask your friends and family to take biz cards and leave them everywhere. Make sure everyone you know is aware of your business venture so you can ask for referrals. If you know of events that are happening in your town, you could approach the events coordinator and see if they are in need of a photographer. If you have kids in sports, activities, girl scouts, etc... offer to be the photographer so they can do the annual picturebook?

Best wishes,
C.~

Hi there,

I can't tell you much about photography. However, I have a 1 year old son and while I was on maternity leave I trained to become a self employed childminder, working from home. I can now work full time, bring in a good wage and not have to pay it out in childcare. And I get to raise my son myself!!

I really rave about this to all pregnant/new mum friends as I feel this is a really good way to go when you have a family.

I am from Scotland, and so don't know about how childminding (is it called nannying in america?) works in usa, but just to plant a little seed for you. Good luck :)
