We're thinking of getting a labradoodle puppy. Does anyone have one? Can you tell me your thoughts about the dog? Good with kids? Shedding? Thanks for you help.

What can I do next?

HI S.,

We used to have a labradoodle. He was very sweet with kids but also very, very active. He would never get tired. He was also very smart. He did shed quite a bit. I definitely recommend getting one, but only if you are home alot to take him on walks.

My neighbor has a labradoodle and she is adoreable.

Pros:
Very cute
Doesn't bark much at all
Sweet with the kids

Cons:
1. She is active and needs to be walked a lot to burn off all her energy.
2. In the summer she likes to dig a hole and lay in it to cool off...a mess for the garden and the dog.
3. She has to be gated into two rooms of the house because she's big and full of energy.

You might want to check the AKC website. I think they still have a survey that you fill out about your family and it ranks dogs in the order that they would be appropriate for your lifestyle (including kids, shedding, activity level, etc.). I think the first generation labradoodles are pretty predictable in terms of temperament, shedding etc. but once you cross two F1's the outcome is harder to determine. If you want additional info on dog breeds I'd be happy to help you. Genetics really does play a huge part in what you are going to end up with so depending on your preferences you need to steer clear of certain breeds. Also you need to take into account if you've had dogs before or if this is your first, what the trainability of the breed is, compatibility with children, etc.

Good luck!

I don't personally have a labradoodle, but my brother does. He has a 5 year old daughter and the dog is wonderful with her. My son who is two is a little less nice, and will sometime pull his tail or his ear and the dog does nothing. I have to say that what I see the dog has a wonderful temperament. He loves to play and wants to be loved. I wouldn't have a problem getting this type of dog for my family.

From my sister-in-laws point of view she would say that the dog does shed. A lot! Their dog is more lab than poodle.
He is pretty large. But he is a good dog.

Good luck to you!

Hi S.!! Our dog trainer has one and they love it. It depends on its personality, but it is trainable and good with kids. The shedding though I think can be an issue.

We got a puggle who turns 1 this month and he has been a great addition to our family, so I would recommend a puggle for kids w/o a doubt!
