I have been wanting to learn about my religion for a very long time and am confused and embarrassed to do so. I was raised in a mixed family jewish mother and christian father. I was exposed to both but not taught about them enough to believe one way or another. I am exposed to Christian religion all of the time but now want to learn about my Jewish religion and see if that is what is going to be right for me. I don't really know how to go about this in a mostly Christian environment. Is there any place out there that I could go to and learn about my Jewish background? I would like something small and inviting to start with. I feel out of place in a large Temple. Help.

What can I do next?

Hi, N..

We belong to Congregation Beth Torah. There are many interfaith families that belong there (including us) and the Rabbi has classes for the questioning and curious...I think they are on Wed night. We are pretty small and the Rabbi is not judgemental. There are also many reform synagogues around as well...Adat Chevarim is small and they just got a new Rabbi(I heard she is fabulous).

Don't be embarrassed...many of us that were raised solely Jewish have fallen out of religion or don't remember much. I find when my son asks questions I have to pull from the recesses of my brain...it's okay. Children have a way of making it all come full-circle somehow...

Good luck.

Feel free to e-mail me if you need more info.

You might be interested to know there is an in-between.
I have good friends who are Messianic. Basically they live by Jewish law, but believe that Christ is Lord.
They go to a small church that is on Campbell Rd near UT Dallas. It's called Eitz Chaim Congregation.
I am a Baptist - but I have gone to their church on special occasions (like their wedding shower) and it was very interesting.

I am most familiar with the two large reform Temple's here in town. Shalom and Emanu-El. I belong to and know Emanu-El has a program where you can take courses. I did it and many people there came from mixed backgrounds. There are many inter-faith families. I would call and ask to speak to a Rabbi.
If you are uncomfortable with the "largeness" let the Rabbi give you some ideas.
