Seizures - Bristow, OK

My son is 22 months old and his only medical issue is allergies. He was not running a fever at all but was a little warm to the touch from running around out side. We were swimming when it happened. He started staring at the horses and dogs. I was talking to him and he wasn't responding so i looked at him he wouldn't blink just had a blank stare on his face. I knew what was happening because I have partial absent seizures. When i picked him up he started jerking as if he was having a clonic tonic seizure. I got him dried off and dressed and drove him to the ER. While on the way there he started foaming from the mouth his only response was grasping my hand. His pupils were dilated. I told the nurse he was unresponsive and had been seizing for 15 minutes. The started doing test he had a fever of 101 but never higher then that. Shortly after being at the hospital he threw up 3 times. They did a lung x ray, urine test, and a blood work up. Nothing showed infection. what makes me very mad is TOLD THEM i have seizures and he was still having the seizure upon arrival they should of done an eeg as soon as i got there. But this hospital is a small town hospital and the people that work there are not the brightest. After all the test came back negative I asked for a CAT SCAN. The cat scan was clear thank god. But it took my son almost 4 hours to start talking again. He couldn't even cry for 2 hours. He was pulling at his tongue a lot so I told the doctor and he said i have no clue why he would do that. He released him with the diagnosis of febrile seizures. The only symptom of a febrile seizure was the fever but it wasn'there until after the seizure. I believe he had a complex partial seizure along with a clonic tonic seizure. I also believe he was pulling at his tongue because it was tingling which is a MAJOR sign of complex partial seizures. Has anyone else had a problem like this with any of these types of seizures. Also he slept for 12 hours straight after we got home from the hospital. He also would not eat for over 24 hours.

So What Happened?

He has a doctors appointment Monday as soon as they open with Dr.Pfansteil. I live an hour away from Tulsa that is why I took him to our home town ER. I called his doctor as soon as we got to the hospital he is the one who told me to demand a CAT SCAN.

I do not know where you live, but we live in Tulsa, and I work @ ST John Medical Center. There are some wonderful Pediatric Neurologist who can help you with these. Please, Please follow up with this. He does not need to suffer with these any time, especially growing up...Call Dr Pat Daley and see if you can get in to see him....Good Luck

Hi K..
I am not an expert, but this sounds very serious to me. If you are not content with the care and answers you got from your local clinic, do not hesitate to go somewhere else. You are your son's medical advocate, don't feel bad about being pushy to get him the best care possible. I see that some people gave you some ideas as to where to take him. AR Children's Hospital is also a good hospital. But I am sure there are many choices of clinics that are going to take this seriously.

Edited to add: Sorry just saw you posted an update before I wrote this. I'm glad you got an appointment. I hope you get some answers.

I think you need to find a good neurologists that can tell the ER doctors what to do when you child comes in. A hospital never checks properly for seizures. I have a brother that has grand mal seizures. He went off his meds and seized for about four hours in his sleep. There was no brain damage, thank goodness, but the ER doctors wouldn't test him for until about seven hours after the fact even though they knew he has a history of epilepsy. A good neurologist can sometimes meet you at the hospital to make sure your child gets proper care.

Make an appointment with his pediatrition and get a referral to a neurologist. If he is only having febrile seizures (doubtful) it wont hurt, but if he is doing something more, it may save his life. Good luck

Hey K.,

I am so sorry for all you and your little man have been through. My only advice is that you seek the guidance of a pediatric neurologist asap. I would ask my pediatrician/primary care physician for a referral immediately. And if asking nicely doesn't result in the referral, then I would politely strong arm them into the referral. If they say you are over worried, 1st time mom, or another episode needs to happen.... I would just reply... "I am only going to ask once more for the much needed referral, otherwise I would like in writing your refusal for the requested referral." Then you can decide to for go an appt without one or speak the neurologist and see if they can waive the referral if you presubmit his ER records. Also seek another doctor for referral... but I doubt you will need to do any of that, as most doctors give referrals for what is not their area of expertise, and I have not met one who would write a letter declining a referral. I hope you get him seen by the correct doctor soon. And I hope his diagnosis is mild and need for treatment little to none.
God Bless,
-MB

When a toddler has something like that happen I would say put that baby in the car and have someone drive you to St. Francis Children's Hospital. That would be a totally scary drive but he needs to see a specialist when it is happening. I think I would call your pediatrician and ask for a referral anyway. If the Doctor won't do it I would call St. Francis anyway and talk to them. At the very least they need to test him, diagnose him correctly, and get him on meds.

You need to do a follow-up with a specialist in the city. You should also be seeing someone about your problems, as these could both be signs of a diet or environmental issue, and need to be addressed before they get worse.
