Hi ladies. I'm a first time mom, but I'm definitely not the type to get really excited about every little tumble. Well, my son (he's 9 mths old) fell today from the couch and bumped his head on the floor and now the side of his head, near his eye, has a red mark and is a little swollen. He doesn't seem to be any more irritable than normal, his appetite is fine, not getting sick, not crying (except for a couple minutes when he fell). It looks like he could have a bit of a black eye. Should I get concerned about this? Should I be doing something for the swelling? I tried to hold a ice pack wrapped in a towel, but he wouldn't let me keep it there. Thanks!
I think he's probably fine - not too far of a fall, and he didn't get sick (vomit) or seem disoriented. Just wait until they walk.... Enjoy the little guy!
He will be fine. Do not worry.. I doubt he would let you hold ice on there anyway..
He will do it fifty more times before he goes to kindergarten so no worries unless there is bleeding, loss of consciousness, or change in behavior for an extended period of times.

My youngest wouldn't let me hold ice on his head either. Watch him to make sure he is not abnormally sleepy. You can also call the ER & ask what to watch for. The swelling should go down on it's own, but I can't tell you how long it will take.

Ohhh man just wait till he starts climbing. He should be fine. just watch for vomitting, stiff neck, abnormally sleepy, or him acting out of it. =) I couldn't hold ice on my little ones head either, but I did it as I would hold her against me and feed her. If she wanted her bottle she would sit still long enough to let me get atleast 5 minutes of ice on it.
Dear mom i have 7 children the youngest is 5 yrs.trust me he's fine if u take him to the er the firstthing they ask is did he fall out is he vomitting if not he is fine.my kids fell so many times they r fine trust me they can take more than what we think.he's not gonna let u put ice because it's cold and to them it hurts worse.but relax he will be fine just watch his behaver.if u call the er there not gonna want to give u any advise . because if something happens to the child u can sue them. but he's fine trust me.
He's most llkely fine. Luckily babies bounce for the most part!
A great tip I got when my son was little: get O. of those herb-filled bags that you can either freeze of heat up for ALL kinds of stuff! Mine has been worth a million bucks.
He's fine. If he's acting normally, didn't lose conciousness from the fall, pupils are equal in size, no vomiting or other changes from normal, he's just got a little bump. and fighting off the ice? He's fine. He's probably going to get a lot more of those before all is said and done.
Have you heard of Arnica? Go to your health food store and buy some. It is GREAT for bumps and bruises (don't use it on broken skin though). We use both the topical and the homeopathic (internal) forms. I would put 2 little tablets in his mouth (it dissolves immediately), and a tiny bit where he bumped. It's best to use it right away, but even later is helpful. For example, my husband took our boys to a batting cage a couple of years ago. He was swinging at a fast ball. The ball bounced off the bat into his shin. Ouch. He came home and put arnica on his shin. His leg, where he put the arnica, did not bruise at all. But, on the outside of where he had arnica, he had a tiny bit of bruising (he covered most of his shin, the bruising was not where the ball hit). It is fabulous!
I think your son sounds just fine. You might take him to a chiro to make sure his spine and neck are still in alignment. If not, you may see an ear infection or something occur. Weird, but yes, one can cause the other.
As long as he didn't lose consciousness or throw up, he should be fine. I would just give him some ibuprofen.
My son is notorious for bumping his head. He seems to get a large goose egg once a year. I took him to the ER the first time cuz I was very concerned. What I have been told to look for are equal pupils. Make sure they are both the same size and reactive to light. Make sure he didn't loose conscienceness when he hit his head. Also, make sure he doesn't become nauseous and start throwing up. If all of that checks out fine, he should be clear of a concusion. Just try to keep the ice on there (I know, easier said than done). Hope he is feeling better soon.
Because there are no signs that he is in pain, I would keep an eye on it and pay attention to his behavior. Just to see if he starts to act a little different and then I would call his doc and/or take him in. It doesn't sound too serious, but keep an eye on him. Welcome to motherhood.
