Should We Go?

Hello. I am interested to hear what all of you think about taking my 19-month old to the Air & Water Show in Chicago. Just a little bit of background. We've been going every year since we moved up here and our older daughter really looks forward to it. Last year since my baby was only 8 months I stayed home with her and my husband and our older daughter went. Now, this year I really want all of us to go, but I'm worried about the really loud jets that fly over the beach. I'm worried if this would be too loud for my baby. Could this hurt her ears at all? She also had tubes in her ears about 4 months ago, which I'm not sure would make a difference or not. I do have ear plugs that I put in her ears when she goes swimming and wondered whether this would help, too, with all the loud noise at the Air & Water show. I'm going to call her ENT doctor anyway before I decide whether or not to take her, but I just wanted to see what all of you fellow moms thought about this. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We've taken my daughter to my brother's band's all ages shows since she was a baby. We even took her to Summerfest a few years ago when the band played there. Some of the shows get really LOUD too. I've always put (even now at age 4) those foam things in her ears to protect her ears and it's never been an issue. She does not have tubes in her ears though and I don't know if that makes a difference at all.

Crazy idea, but how about lunch at the John Hancock? You can see the planes but be inside. The views is great, the food is good, etc.

I agree with the others, its too loud for young children. You can ask your ped to be sure, but i wouldnt do it. Ive read that even regular lawn mowers are too loud for small childrens ears and can damage their hearing. Better to be safe than sorry. Maybe get a babysitter for the baby if you want to go with your husband and daughter.

I would absolutely agree that you have to have something to cover her ears - that noise could cause damage.

In my personal opinion, she is too young to go. We took our daughter (of course she was only 2 months), but had to leave immediately. While there, I talked to several parents who told me that their children were too young, even at 2 years old. We still will go this year, but I will be taking my child to the children's museum. That way my husband can still see the show.
