Sleeps All the Time

My 2 month old (will be 3 mo's Oct 2)has been sleeping almost non stop for the past week. She is only eating about 20 ounces a day as opposed to the 28-30 she had been eating. As soon as she eats, she seems to fall asleep. Does this seem normal? She didn't used to sleep sp much during the day.

What can I do next?

I don't know anything about formula feeding amts since I breastfed, but I know with breastfed babies who are sleepy, it means that they are conserving energy/calories and they need to eat MORE.

I would call your pediatrician if you are worried- and it sounds like you are. If this is a big change for her and her eating amt has DROPPED then it's not a growth spurt- she'd be eating MORE, not LESS.

Just my thoughts....

My daughter was exclusively breastfed at that age but went through a month phase of sleeping 12 hours a night and then took a morning nap right after that. It passed by about 4 months and then she never slept again. Looking back, I think it was a growth spurt.

Hi L.,

I'm a first time mom of a 10 month little girl. She may be going through a growth spurt. They say it's normal for babies to sleep when this happens. My daughter slept all the time for hours straight. Sometimes to where I worried. If she seems to be gaining weight, I wouldn't worry. 3 months...is she due for a doctor's appt? You may ask then.

Who's know...you may be very very lucky like me...she is still a good sleeper. I'll probably pay for it with the next one :o)

Lots to learn....have fun. I goes by sooo fast.

yes its normal. Just relax a bit. This is the least of the wavy road ahead of being a 1st time mother. You will also enjoy it more if you do not worry about the things like this. Trust me, this will be little. Enjoy the time you have to yourself and do not worry about her sleeping too much. That's what newborns are supposed to do in order for their brains to grow. Enjoy! Congrats! And feel good!

It's totally normal, she will get into a routine of naps at about 3 months. She is going from newborn adjusting to all the lights and sounds to a baby who is on a schedule.

I would say she's finishing up a growth spurt. All three of my kids went through this. The following link talks about nursing babies, but applies to all babies. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/growth-spurt.html

They eat and eat(which is why she was taking in so much food), and then they sleep and sleep(which is why she napping so much now). She will come out of it soon, and be bigger! My 4 year old just went through one, and she actually napped everyday :).

Good luck!

I think the sleep thing is normal, but on a side note, 28-30oz of formula is A LOT of formula for a baby this age. I think 20oz for a 2 month old seems more in the range of normal. Good luck!
