Hello. This question is for people who have or had their own small business with a store front. I am trying to open my business in my area and am having trouble with realtors. I may see a store front that I think will work, so I call the number from the sign to no avail. I never get a call back, well almost never, and have only gotten a live person once. Is this normal? Did you get a realtor of your own to help? I'm getting frustrated and really want this, but don't know what to do. I don't have an accent, speak clearly and at a reasonable pace, state my name clearly and numbers as clear as humanly possible. I called one place and the woman called back the next day and we set up a time to view the site the following week. Sadly, the place was not within my budget. I found another location and had to call the guy multiple times before speaking to him. I left messages and he never called back, decided one day to call one last time and he answered! Set up an appt to view the location. Well I like this spot, the price is right, good location, parking etc. He did not know what the taxes were, its a NNN, so I emailed him, as he requested, so that he could get back to me with those numbers. He never did. I waited a week and an half after sending the email to call, thinking he may be busy etc, again -no answer, I left a msg also gave my email in case it went to his spam, and nothing. These are the only two times I ever reached anyone. I don't call and leave messages everyday or everytime I call. I call during regular business hours. Can anyone give insight into what I may be doing wrong? Oh the two times I met with realtors, I dressed professionally, was prompt ( even though both times they were late) my hair was nice etc. I am in my thirties, so not real young or old, although most people, based solely on looks, think I am in my mid 20's. I'm just trying to give as much info as possible for what the problem may be. I don't think it's my looks as most times I don't speak to anyone. Oh if there are any agents on here and you can offer insight, please do. TIA

What can I do next?

I would never buy, especially starting a business, because the area might not support what you have to offer...but then again, I am in Southern California. I rent and always have. I started my business at 28....almost 10 years ago....and still in the same center.

We had this same issue with realtors when we were selling our house. Huge flakes. A few are professional, but the most of them would call, make an appointment and then many were 1-2 hours late, never showed up and one I even saw pull up and then drive away and THEN called me an hour later saying the clients didn't like the neighborhood. Um, ok.

Go into a well-known real estate office and find out if anyone in there in actually interested in helping you. Be straight - up and then them you don't want bulls---.

I had a small repair shop about 2 yrs ago and went through similar things when looking for a store front.
The place I ended up operating in was found 'through a friend'. I did call numerous places with signs posted in the window and either never heard back or the owners just never came through. I just chalked it up to them not really needing the money. I don't understand it.
Good luck and hang in there.

Hi, Keisha:

Check the Chamber of Commerce in your area.
They may be able to help.
Or check out the Better Business Bureau in
your area.
Good luck.

so unprofessional of them. you shouldn't have to dress to impress the realtor. i meet 'em in jeans and a t-shirt, and if they don't work for me promptly and with properties i'm actually interested in i move on to the next one.
fortunately my small business didn't require a store front, but i do think you ought to consider renting first. but that's another post.
i would be on the phone to owners or managers of the real estate office asking why you've been treated this way.

You can hire a buyer's agent. A buyer's agent gets paid through the procedes of the sale so that shouldn't concern you. In other words he(she) doesn't get paid unless you buy a property--so he will work hard to find you the right location, price ect. Have you gone online and looked for business property and left online messages? That might be a faster way than trying to call an agent.
Also the Chamber of Commerence has a program called SCORE for new business owners. It is a group of retired business owners and managers who guide you through the process of start-ups. Contact them and ask to be matched to a mentor who can help you plow through the process. {maybe don't word it that way ;-) }
