Hello Mama's,
I am on a smoothie kick & I wish I would have done this years ago. I do not eat a healthy portion of fruits and vegatables so I have started to make smoothies twice a day with spinach, berries, protein powder and flax seed oil..... What are some main ingredients to add to my smoothie that will give me an energy boost?

I posted a week ago that I am going to purchase a Heatlh master blender by montel, well after researching I decided to purchase the Vitamix blender because it has the best reviews.

ps: I did search our archives and did not come up with what I was looking for. Thanks for taking the time!

What can I do next?

The key is not to mix individual vitamins or minerals - without being a nutritionist or a food scientist (even better), you run the risk of choosing the wrong things. Even if what you choose has a basis in fact, if you mix things without all the other "partner" ingredients they need to be absorbed and metabolized at the cellular level, you are wasting your money and possibly doing harm. I am a nutritional consultant and if you email me about what you are using, I can probably help you choose better options in a comprehensive form that you can mix into a smoothie. The fruits and flax seed are fine, but I don't know about the protein powder as most of them aren't balanced.

how about some essential B vitamins that are in liquid form? Be careful..I forget if it is B6 but one of them is good for energy...the others like B12 might make you hungry....I mix the two up but adding one of them would help.

Good for you that you like smoothies. I start ever day with a protein smoothie. I use an excellent non GMO protein powder and it really adds to the flavor, helps my muscles, has helped me ease into the next phase of woman hood, and fills me up.

If you are interested in my recipes and what protein powder I use, email me and we can set up a time to talk.

Hi Loving---You can put just about anything you want to in a smoothie. You will want to be careful of the source of the protein. I would avoid any milk proteins, whey/casein, and I can explain why later. Just go to www.pcrm.org and put dairy in the search box to start. I will send you ingredient information on a protein mix that I use and my doctor loves. I will also send you a recipe for a smoothie that I got from a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition. The superfood ingredients that it contains, outside of a banana and berries, is green tea leaves, a specially grown for food brewers yeast (for those energy packed B vitamins) and ground flax SEED. You want the seeds, as those contain lots of protein and fiber, vitamins and minerals and a compound called lignans, which contain cancer fighting compounds, as well as those wonderful plant-based omega 3 fatty acids.

I could send you samples of the protein meal replacement powders. It comes in french vanilla and dutch chocolate. My husband likes the chocolate with choc almond milk, almond butter, a little mocha powder and then we blend with frozen coffee ice cubes for a coffee mocha/almond flavor. Again, there is no end to the combinations that you can put together. My kids like berries, but I like orange/pineapple/mango juices with frozen tropical fruits...maybe with some coconut as well.

I'll talk to you soon. Be well...D.
PS. I can help with strategies to get more fruits and veggies into the diet also.
