Snotty Nose Wont Go Away!

My 4 month old has had a congested nose for over a month now. Her nose isn't runny, it's more like thick white snot. She is breastfed only. I've done everything from bathroom steams with eucalyptus oil to dunking in the ocean. Bulbing her nose isn't working, especially because she throws a fit when I try. She can still breathe through her nose, and I think it bothers me more than it does her. Anyone have any experience with this?

What can I do next?

Have you treid saline drops! You can use it as often as you would like, also I would take her in to the doctors office!

Hi V....
My daughter went through the same thing...she is 7 months now...
My pediatrician told me that babys naturally produce tons of snot and it is completely normal...as long as it is white or clear...
If it changes color that could be a sign of an infection.
The boogies also start when they are teething too.

Continue to bulb her nose, trust me, it is a lot easier now than when they are two! LOL Try a saline nose spray if they have one for infants, if not then ask the pharmacist how much to give your baby, probably just a squirt or two in each nose. You are breastfeeding - yea!! Squirt your milk in her nose - again, she might get annoyed like with the bulb but it really is a lot easier now than when they are bigger! Your title says, snotty nose won't go away, but your description says congested. If she is snotty at all, just continue to bulb the snot out, if you don't keep it moving - she can get an ear infection. If she is just congested but breathing fine, just continue to do what you are doing. Are you running the heat at night? I know everyone in our family gets congested during this time of the year.
Good luck!

Iodine or inositol can thin mucous. But the thick mucous could be her body's way of covering up something it does not like and cannot get rid of. Vitamin A could be low, but that is usually a thin mucous that drips down the face. I could give you a better opinion if I saw her or or a picture of her taken when the problem existed or heard her voice. But I just signed on to this site and have no idea what the policies are regarding personal contacts.

Try a humidifier. Helped my son. Honestly I wouldn't worry too much unless its green. Then its an infection. However, I have been told that the babies immune system are getting stronger and they need to have these colds so the body can learn how to fight it off. Also did she get the flu shot? My son received the first dose but he ended up with an upper respiratory infection so I didn't let him get the second dose.
Hopefully it helps.

My 4 month old has the same problem, and suctioning has become a part of our daily routine. My doc suggested seeing an ENT to find out if there is more to it than just small nasel passages. and another doc even suggested that she may have a reflux problem which is coming up into her sinuses.

We've decided to wait it out until shes a bit older to see if her passages will grow as she does, and hoprfully stop the problem.

I think it bothers me far more than it bothers her...

Try drinking fresh-squeezed orange juice every day yourself. Your breastmilk may not contain enough vitamin C.

I would talk to your doctor. Your baby could have dairy allergies that are getting passed from you to her and you might need to stop all dairy products or get her checked for some other types of allergies to food that you are eating.

have you checked your baby for an ear infections or sinus infection? even if she's just breats feeding, that can happen too. I would take her to the pediatrician in case it's and ear infection. I've also discovered too much heat or steam can trigger MOLD in the room(whixch can trigger a load of allergies) so, I try not to do that anymore.

Breastmilk in her nose 3 or 4 times a day will work, stop bulbing, it is irritating and making it worse probably. If your air is heated/dry a humidifier or vaporizer, plain cold water is best, will help her and you. It is doing what it is supposed to do, do not suppress with medicines. As long as she can breathe and suck you can leave it alone. Rarely there is a structural narrowness, but that is usually something they outgrow.
