Soap-making It Out of Scraps of Other Soap?

Hi there. When I was young, my mom used to melt our "left over" soap together and make bars of soap. Have any of you ever done this and what kind of a container do you put it in? I think this would be a good thing to learn how to do. I would ask her but she seems to be more forgetful these days and I'm not sure she would remember.
Plus, I am open to other soap making ideas but I don't know that it would be any cheaper than watching for sales. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I love making "homemade" soap. It's not that difficult. There are lots of cute molds you can buy but the ones that are my favorite are little heart shaped tart tins that are supposed to be for baking. They work great for soaps.
I use an antique grater for shaving the soap and it makes it melt easier.

Google!

Have fun!

I put scraps of soap into a mesh bag then just wash with that. I don't make my own soap but I do make my own lotion.

Lotion is:

4 ounces of olive oil
2 ounces of water
1 ounce of beeswax

Esential oils or fragrances as desired.

Melt all ingrediants in a double boiler stirring constantly. Then whisk until cool. It will seperate some (less if you put it in a blender) but we love it!

A washed out yoplait container could be a good mold for a round soap.

My grandmother used to use a microwave safe dish and warm to just soft, then mash them together with her hands. The soaps (while not fancy or beautiful) were colorful, crazy shapes, and reminded me of some kind of cookie/candy/stained glass concoction. I am sure it started with one or two smashed together, then grew (and shrank from use) from there.

I swear the Lilian Vernon catalog used to have one that was a mold that you put them in, then pushed down to press them together. You might check there.
