By law they have to fix it. Give them written notice for it to be fixed, include in it that by law you have the right to break lease without penalty if it is not fixed in a timely manner and that you will contact the Texas Renter's Association. I went through something simular the first time that I move out on my own and once they realized that I knew my rights as a renter, they fixed the issue promptly.

Good Luck!

I believe that they are required by state law to fix it. Contact the Texas Renter's Association....

A.,
That is your Apartments responsibilty to get the door repaired. You should check your lease and then advise your apartment complex that you are going to contact the management company of fair housing association. In the meanwhile, how much damage is there to your door? If not too much I can see if my dad can come fix it for you. He's the best, a jack of all trades. Let me know.

OMG A.!!

Your landlord MUST pay for this!! Do not let them pull one over your head, how dare they get smart like this? I can imagine how you feel, it makes me so angry when I hear stories like these, they KNOW the right thing to do is fix it, you are a single mom and they are just trying to be cheap, they must think they can get away with it. I would call the housing authority immediately (make sure you filed a police report) then give your landlord a copy and say if they don't fix it immediately you will out of next months rent, you cannot live like that, feeling in danger. I am so sorry . Let me know if you need anything!

Sorry, I don't know anyone, but the only way you should be responsible for fixing that door is if you owned the place! That apt complex is completely responsible for fixing that door!!!!! If they refuse to fix it, that is putting you and your family in more danger and you should deffinitely call someone to turn them in!!!!!!! I don't know who to call, but I'm 'bout to try to find out, and I'll message you again. Hopefully, another mom who reads this will know that info, sooner than I can get it, cause I know, I'm not the only one messaging you with this type of info. I am very angry for you! Don't let them do you like that!

A.-I am so sorry that this happened to you. What area are you in, perhaps we can help. Also, your apartment complex won't help you??? They have to help you-they are the "landlords." If they don't pay it you have a right to have it fixed and take it out of your next months rent. Just a thought-I know that you can do that with a house.

For about 6 months, I worked at a call center where I answered calls for the emergency lines of apartment complexes. From what I understand, they HAVE to fix your door, but I think you have to file a police report, which I'm sure you did when you realized your apartment had been broken into. You may want to check out your lease, and also contact your local housing authority. I may be able to help you out finding your local housing authority if you tell me what city you live in. The best part about living in an apartment complex is that you will be able to have good living conditions no matter what.

Our apt was broken into and the complex fixed the door and put on an extra lock w/key as well. They have to fix it, it's their property or you can move out due to poor maintenance. You don't feel safe there and you fear for the safety of you and your children. Tell them to fix it or else. If you have to move there are apt agencies that find you a place and move you for free.

On the other hand i know how you feel. I could'nt sleep for days and every noise i heard was the bad guys coming back. I ended up having my daughter early because of the stress. Good-luck.
