Hi Moms. In January my mother passed away unexpectedly and it devastated my family. There are days the grief can be overwhelming. A good friend suggested I find something to get involved in that may become greater than my grief. I'm not involved in any extracurricular things in the area so I've been seeking God for an answer to what to get involved with close to home. Are there any mom(s) who volunteer for some group or organization that provide assistance in some way in the Rowlett/Rockwall area? Thank you.

What can I do next?

Have you checked out Servolution? My church in ft. worth has a group going. It's a book by Dino Rizzo about serving the community through Christ. You can get it Mardel or Ebay and maybe start or join an existing group. You can find their page on Facebook. It's a great thing to get involved in!
We are throwing birthday parties for a homeless shelter and organizing drives for World Relief and the shelter right now.

I do think you're on to something there...are there any places near you that help homeless or an animal shelter? Elderly? I'm not in your area but I know meal on wheels is always looking for volunteers. God Bless you and your family...I can't even imagine.

Hi M.P.,

My mother passed away a few years back. it is such a difficult time. I found a lot of comfort in visiting elderly ladies in the nearby convalecent hospital.
My mom spent her last months in one. I could see how lonely she was and how she would light up when someone new would give her attention. So I started visiting one near my home about 3 months after she passed. It was funny, but sometimes I saw my mother in a few of their eyes.
I started taking my kids and they would bring thier toy or stuffed animal. The elderly are usually lining the hallways in wheelchairs, just staring in to space. As soon as they see a child come down the hall, they want to talk with them, hold their hand, see their toy, etc,...so there is no worry about what to say. Some really enjoy if you read a simple bible verse to them, like Psalm 23.

Give Girl Scouts a try. There are always groups of girls just waiting for a leader. It is very rewarding.

just want to share a website/foundation with you.

It is for people (especially women) who have lost their moms. They have links to greif recovery and have a luncheon coming up in May.

I lost my mom in November - it was sooner than we expected but we did expect it. That still doesn't ease the loss.

I am sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss. I really am. I have had some pretty devasting losses in the last year. A cluster of them.
I think you should just check out things in your area. Call the local chamber of commerce, the local library, or a local hospital. Look up your local adult services programs. They will know of all kinds of things to put you in contact with. Some schools even have an adopt-a-grandma program where you help out with reading or story telling to little kids.
There are just so many ways to give and if you're doing it in your mom's honor, it can make you feel closer to her.

It is in giving that we receive.

I hope you get great responses for your specific area, but if you don't..you can find something close by. I think your friend was right. Get yourself out and get yourself busy.

I wish you well!
