Hi there, has anyone else had incredibly sore nipples around ovulation? Ive had my period back now for almost a year. It makes breastfeeding my 19 mo old really painful.
Usually lasts for a few days but this month its longer and more OUCH!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advice moms! It seems that my little guy has begun holding on with his teeth lately and that was making me more sore than normal. I relalized that my nipples were feeling like they did when I first started nursing. And I noticed teeth marks when he lets go. So we are trying to nip this in the bud and hopefully stop this trend, as he has never bitten before. Because neither of us are ready to stop nursing yet. I love the snuggletime and bonding so much. ANy advice on getting him not to use teeth will be appreciated.

A great majority of women get sore breasts and tender nipples around ovulation time - it's just a side effect of your bodies' natural hormones that are released in greater quantities while you ovulate. My nipples are sore once a month, every month when I ovulate, and have been that way since I started my periods at age 11. Some women are just more sensitive to their own hormones than others - there isn't anything medically you can do, but cold packs (you know the ones you use when breastfeeding and engorged) may alleviate some of the tenderness. More or less, you just have to tough it out and move on.

i had the same problem... around the same time even i think. they aren't nursing as much which your body is also adjusting to. only think you can do is nipple cream... motrin. one of those things for anyone who breastfeeds and their baby isn't nursing as often. congrats by the way. i breastfed my babies, 18 months, 19 months and 22 months. seems like neither of us wanted to give up on the last one. :)

J.,
Well your child is now almost 2 and should be on regulaer milk by now. But I myself get in so much pain due to me ovulating!!!! So i really can see where you are coming from. The one thing I do for them is take warm baths with no soap just bath oils. Take some menstrol pills and you should start feeling better. But do remember that you will need to do this every month. Sorry

If you are on a birth control pill ask your doctor if you can try another one. Sometimes breasts and/or nipples get sorer with certain levels of hormones in the pills.

Try using a nipple shield. You can purchase them at Target or Baby's R Us

Hi J.-
Yes, I had that exact thing. It was so painful, I toughed it out for about 5 months and then stopped breastfeeding. My daughter was already over 2 years old, though. Have you seen an acupuncturist or healer that can help to balance hormones? I think that's what I will try, if it happens to me again this second time around (breastfeeding 2nd baby).
