Starting Out on Baby Food

My son has mastered the whole cereal in a bottle thing. And I started him on green beans. I was told 2 tablespoons worth at a time, with a bottle with no cereal in it. Then what??? I'm so confused about the process. And my doc has no kids and is very by the book, whereas I"m completely the opposite. I think you should go by what the baby tells you really, since every child is different. How long do you give them a certain veggie? a week? do you start with the greens, then orange color ones?

What can I do next?

well as far as cereal goes...i started giving my daughter and son, right after birth. They love it! plus they tend to sleep better. I know doctors say wait, but this is what my mom did too..my kids are perfectly healthy, and a lot less fussier than other babies

I have a six month old that we just started on baby food. I beleive that 3 months is too early to be giving him the baby foods. Our doc said cereal at 4 months and start vegis at 6 months, then fruit at 7 months, etc.

You should start with the yellow/orange vegis first, introducing only one at a time and stay with that one for a few days before adding another one. This will allow time to make sure that your child is not allergic to that certain food before beginning another one.

Hey V.!

My doc told me to start on the orange and give them the same food for 3-4 days to make sure there is no allergic reaction. She said the baby would let me know when he was full. He did. My son was a big eater I guess. The first time, he ate about half of a size one jar, and it wasn't long before he ate the full jar. And yes, he would want a bottle after he was done. Not immediately, usually about 30 min. later. After we went through all the orange, we switched to green.
Also, our doc said no cereal in a bottle b/c it can cause choking.
We did cereal from a bowl, then orange, then green.

I used this website with it's charts for different ages while my son was an infant. It seemed to work well. He did fairly well at taking on new foods and textures. They're careful about not starting on allergenic-type foods, as well. Here's the url... http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solids.htm.

I was always told to start your baby on cereal until they are about 4months. When the child turns 4months and has been doing okay on the cereal, you can start introducing veggies. Stick with the same veggie for 2-3days to make sure they are not having a reaction to it..then you can start another veggie...I think I remeber them saying that you shouldnt start fruit too soon because of the acid in it. Good Luck..

My doc is completely different than yours as far as when/how to start foods.
rice/oatmeal cereal at 4-6 months spoon fed never in the bottle
along with applesauce, bananas, peas and squash
or if you are comfortable with it just get all stage one foods it will say that on the jar.
they can start juice as well but dilute it atleast 1/2 water, 1/2 juice
you should start one new food every 4 days that way you know if the baby has a reaction to it or not.
I see the baby is about to be 3 months so me personally I would start feeding him cereal with a spoon and stick with that until he is 4 months
6-8 months are stage 2
8-10 stage 3

There is so much I can tell you here is my email if you want to talk further good luck! hope this helped ( :

Congratulations on your new baby!

Under 3 months of age is quite young to begin solids, actually. Babies really only need breast milk (or formula) for the first 6 months. Then begin feeding thin purees of food from a spoon, not from a bottle.

I highly recommend the book "Super Baby Foods" by Ruth Yaron. This is a wonderful resource and she gives great advice on when to start which foods. Here is the book's website: http://www.superbabyfood.com/

Good luck!!

Just a little FYI, the recent information is not to start giving solids until 6 months, and we can skip the cereal all together. It has very little nutritional value, and we are filling our babies up with straight carbs. I was so glad to hear that, as I never used cereal for that reason. I figured if they were going to learn to eat something, it needed to be better for them, but at the time, that was just my opinion. When I heard Dr. Sears say it on Dr. Phil recently, I was thrilled. You also need to be cautious about starting food too early, as the babies digestive system is just not ready, and it can lead to a higher allergic reaction, and general irritability. Honelsty breastmilk or formula is best for now, and it is really all he should need for a little while. Do you have an older dr?? Sometimes they tend to still believe in the older methods of doing things, which is great for some, but if we did not learn from new information, our kids would not be in carseats :) Have fun exploring the next few months, and remember, before you know it he will be eating you out of house and home :) Take care ~A.~

try one veggie at a time until he has tried them all, usually wait 3 - 5 days between each one so that you can tell if he is having an allergic reaction or not.

Next try the fruits the same way, then you can just start mixing and matching and moving on to the mixed foods.

Wow Cereal in a bottle, I was told by our ped. that that is a really bad thing to do. It doesn't teach babies how to get full.

I would do rice cereal by spoon first for about 2 weeks and then move to Oatmeal for a week and then Mixed cereal for a week.
We started our son on veggies (along with some cereal) for dinner when he was about 5 1/2 months old. Giving him green beans first (since they are the least sweet) every night for a week to make sure he didn't have any reactions. Then we did carrots, squash, peas, and finally sweet potatoes. We then started fruit after we knew he was ok with the veggies.
We started incorperating breakfast right after we started fruit (cereal and fruit).

I hope this helps.

Our doc doesn't recommend starting cereal or any kind of solid before 4 months old (and the latest recommendation is to wait until 6 months). Then you start with rice or oatmeal and you feed it from a spoon, not a bottle. After that, you use 1st foods and try a new one every 4 days to see if the baby has an allergy to it. It doesn't necessarily matter what you start with, but we always did veggies first.
